This incident came two days after the killing of two children in an explosion of a mine left behind by Houthi militias in the province of Shabwa, after they stumbled upon it while grazing their camels in the area of 'Kromom' in the district of Nisab. Omar stated in an interview with 'Al-Ittihad' that Yemen is suffering a humanitarian catastrophe due to the mines, which have not been limited to targeting military personnel, but also threaten the lives of innocent civilians, and pose a constant danger, as they are planted in roads, farms, and residential areas, even in water wells, making daily life for Yemenis fraught with danger. The total number of victims of Houthi mines in Yemeni provinces until the end of 2024 has reached 4,501 killed and 50,830 injured, in a continuous humanitarian crisis that threatens the lives of civilians. Omar pointed out that reports indicate that hundreds of thousands of mines have been planted in various areas, without maps defining their locations, which complicates efforts to remove them and makes it difficult to secure affected areas, increasing the hardship of the engineering teams working to remove them, as experts rely on manual and available technologies. Omar expressed gratitude to the 'Masam' project, which plays a significant role in clearing Yemeni lands of these dangers, pointing out that 'Masam' has been able to remove thousands of mines and has contributed to restoring life to areas that were abandoned due to continuous threats. He called on the international community to bear its responsibilities towards this humanitarian crisis, to provide greater support to efforts to remove mines and secure affected areas, and to increase support for these programs, and to provide advanced technologies that facilitate detection and removal operations, demanding pressure on the Houthis to stop planting mines and surrender maps of their locations. The Yemeni Human Rights Minister considered that mines do not only pose an immediate threat, but also threaten Yemen's future, as they hinder reconstruction and development efforts, deprive thousands of farmers of using their land, and affect trade and transportation movement. Omar stated that the Yemeni government will continue to work with international partners and humanitarian organizations to face this threat and protect civilians.
