A vida de uma criança de 3 anos foi salva graças aos policiais militares do 36° Batalhão de Polícia Militar em Valão do Barro, distrito de São Sebastião do Alto, na Região Serrana do Rio.
A pequena Cecília se engasgou com um pedaço de nugget enquanto jantava, deixando mãe e irmãos desesperados.
O serviço de Polícia Militar logo foi acionado e os agentes Mahatma dos Santos e Wercellen realizaram a Manobra de Heimlich, técnica de primeiros socorros que desobstrui as vias aéreas da criança.
Após o atendimento imediato, a menina foi levada a uma unidade de saúde para avaliação médica. O procedimento foi tão eficaz que ela recebeu alta horas depois.
A ação rápida e precisa da equipe foi essencial para evitar uma tragédia, demonstrando a importância do preparo das forças de segurança em situações de emergência. Números de casos aumentam
Em 2024, o Corpo de Bombeiros do Estado do Rio de Janeiro atendeu 493 casos de obstrução de via aérea, porém, o número de mortes de crianças com até 9 anos por sufocamento é alarmante.
De acordo com um levantamento feito pela Universidade Veiga de Almeida (UVA), as mortes por sufocamento nessa faixa de idade cresceram cerca de 40% nos últimos três anos no Brasil.
Em 2022, foram 242 mortes por inalação e ingestão de alimentos ou outros objetos causando obstrução do trato respiratório, crescimento de 7,5% em relação ao registrado em 2021 (225 mortes) e de 39,8% em relação ao registrado em 2020 (173).
Bebês, por exemplo, podem se engasgar com o leite durante a amamentação. Já no caso de crianças menores, o risco maior é com alimentos em grão, doces ou pequenos objetos levados à boca por curiosidade.
Manobra de Heimlich
A Manobra de Heimlich é uma técnica de primeiros socorros utilizada para desobstruir as vias aéreas de uma pessoa que está sufocando devido à obstrução por um corpo estranho, como pedaços de comida ou pequenos objetos.
Criada em 1974 pelo médico norte-americano Henry Heimlich, a manobra é considerada um método eficaz e seguro para casos de asfixia em adultos e crianças a partir de um ano de idade.
De acordo com a American Heart Association (AHA) e a Cruz Vermelha Americana, a manobra consiste em compressões abdominais que geram pressão suficiente para expelir o objeto que bloqueia a respiração.
No entanto, sua aplicação varia de acordo com a idade e a condição da vítima. E atenção: A técnica não deve ser utilizada se a pessoa ainda estiver conseguindo tossir ou respirar, pois a tosse é o mecanismo natural de defesa do corpo para remover o objeto.
Além disso, em gestantes e pessoas obesas, o ponto de pressão deve ser ajustado para a região do esterno, evitando lesões no abdômen.
Como realizar a Manobra de Heimlich?

Em adultos e crianças acima de um ano:
Identificação do engasgo: Se a vítima estiver tossindo, incentive-a a continuar, pois isso pode desobstruir as vias naturalmente. Caso a pessoa esteja incapaz de respirar, falar ou tossir, a manobra deve ser realizada imediatamente.
Posicionamento: Fique atrás da vítima e envolva seus braços ao redor da cintura.
Posição das mãos: Feche uma das mãos em punho e posicione-a entre o umbigo e o osso do esterno (a boca do estômago). Com a outra mão, segure o punho.
Compressões Abdominais: Pressione para dentro e para cima em movimentos rápidos e firmes, repetindo o procedimento até que o objeto seja expelido ou a vítima recupere a respiração.
Acompanhamento: Se a vítima perder a consciência, inicie a reanimação cardiopulmonar (RCP) e acione imediatamente o serviço de emergência (SAMU - 192).
Em bebês menores de um ano:
A manobra deve ser adaptada para evitar lesões, pois a estrutura óssea dos bebês é mais frágil. O procedimento correto é:
Posicionamento: Segure o bebê de bruços, apoiando sua cabeça e tronco no antebraço, com a face voltada para baixo. A cabeça deve estar ligeiramente mais baixa que o tronco.
Tapas nas costas: Com a palma da mão, dê cinco tapas firmes entre as escápulas (as "costas" do bebê).
Compressões torácicas: Se a obstrução persistir, vire o bebê de barriga para cima e, com dois dedos, faça cinco compressões suaves no centro do tórax, logo abaixo da linha dos mamilos.
Repetição: Alterne entre os tapas nas costas e as compressões torácicas até que o objeto seja expelido ou o bebê recupere a respiração.
O que fazer enquanto o socorro não chega?
Enquanto aguarda a chegada dos profissionais de saúde, é importante manter a calma e agir rapidamente:
Verifique se a criança consegue tossir ou respirar. Caso sim, incentive-a a continuar tossindo para tentar expelir o objeto naturalmente.
Se a criança não conseguir respirar, aplique a Manobra de Heimlich. Em bebês menores de um ano, utilize o método específico, alternando tapas nas costas e compressões torácicas.
Se a criança perder a consciência, inicie a RCP (Reanimação Cardiopulmonar). O atendimento precoce aumenta significativamente as chances de sobrevivência.
No Brasil, os principais números para acionar em caso de engasgo infantil são o SAMU (192), que oferece atendimento gratuito com profissionais treinados para orientar os responsáveis enquanto a equipe de socorro está a caminho, e o Corpo de Bombeiros (193), que também possui equipes especializadas para emergências médicas.
Além disso, é importante ter anotado o número de emergência da sua cidade ou do plano de saúde, caso possua um, já que algumas localidades contam com serviços próprios de atendimento pré-hospitalar. Manter esses contatos em um local visível pode agilizar a resposta em momentos críticos.

It's one of the least controversial health & general social wellbeing improvements a community can make. Unlike chlorine, it doesn't make the water unpalatable or have any noticeable affect on taste. It's pretty much 100% win for all involved. I fail to see a downside other than, perhaps, fairly trivial cost.
