But plotting out energy use, running a turn out, marking off damage on Ship System Display photocopies, really captured the feel of Star Trek combat, being an officer where skill matters.

The first hamster wheel I became aware of was the Loss/Gain Wheel. As I observed my thoughts, I noticed a pattern that fit this framework perfectly. It would appear constantly—while sitting on the balcony, a thought would pop up: I should be doing more (Gain). Then, another thought would follow: But if I do that, I lose time with my family (Loss).
This would set the wheel spinning, triggering a cascade of thoughts: I'm not present right now. I can't be present (Loss). I'm losing this valuable moment by not being present. I should be gaining more control over my mind.
Brutal, relentless thoughts—stealing me from the only thing that holds energy, the only thing that matters: the present moment.
I realized that whenever I drifted into thoughts of the past or future, I wasn’t actually living—not through my senses, at least. My life was filtered through memories or imagined scenarios, and I could immediately see that this was a trap—a secondhand life. I also began noticing a daydreaming behavior triggered by these thoughts: where I’d construct a fantasy of being strong and highly capable, like I was Jason Bourne—deriving a small pleasure from this imagined story. I observed this pattern silently, recognizing how poorly I was living, despite having everything I needed.
Another realization hit me: my eyes weren’t actually seeing everything in front of me. I was always slightly zoned out, thinking about what needed to be done. If you pay close attention, you might notice this in yourself too. Your eyes may feel overly relaxed, unfocused, and slightly disengaged—almost as if they’ve stopped really looking. It’s subtle, but I believe this is the early stage of vision decline.
To witness this phenomenon in full force, take a ride on the underground in any major city. Look around at people completely zoned out—their eyes glazed over, their minds elsewhere. It’s like a real-life zombie apocalypse.
My four-year-old daughter has even made a game out of catching me in this state. When she notices me drifting while we’re playing Barbies (yes, you read that right—Barbies, lol), she snaps her fingers, points two fingers at her own eyes, then at mine. We chuckle, and just like that, we’re back—back to reality.
On the flip side, when you dissolve these old mental programs that keep you trapped in a secondhand life, your senses begin to reawaken. Colors seem brighter, sounds become richer, and you start noticing the sheer beauty surrounding you. This sensory awakening is powerful—it energizes the body in ways caffeine never could. Ironically, as your awareness heightens, your need for coffee begins to fade.
These initial observations led me to a startling realization: I didn’t actually know what I enjoyed. I had no real hobbies, nothing I did just for myself. I remember standing on my balcony, asking myself, What do I enjoy? And then… waiting, watching for a deeper answer to emerge.
Even my wife noticed it. She once told me she didn’t know what to list as my hobbies on her website. I was either working or helping the family—there was nothing else.
