It's fascinating to watch In the Heat of the Night, listening to the commentary. At one point the director Norman Jewison, who's work I like a lot, notes that we now have "a more democratic nation in respect to race relations" and bemoans the individual and people not being a part of something.
The sad thing he seems to miss is that the south was ABSOLUTLY democratic: The MAJORITY decided that blacks had no rights and that was that.
In contrast if you 'focus on the individual' you see that EVERY individual has rights, no matter HOW MANY people don't want them to.

THE PYRRHIC WAR
The year was 280 BC. Rome, a burgeoning power in the Italian peninsula, found itself facing a formidable foe: King Pyrrhus of Epirus. A brilliant tactician and a seasoned warrior, Pyrrhus had been called upon by the Greek city of Tarentum to defend them against the encroaching Roman legions.
The two armies clashed at Heraclea, a small town in southern Italy. Pyrrhus's army, with its disciplined phalanxes and war elephants, proved a formidable force. The Romans, though outnumbered, fought with their characteristic tenacity. The battle was fierce, with both sides suffering heavy losses. In the end, Pyrrhus emerged victorious, but at a terrible cost. His army had been decimated.
The phrase "Pyrrhic victory" was born from this battle. It described a victory so costly that it was almost a defeat. Pyrrhus himself is said to have remarked, "Another such victory and we are undone."
The war continued, with Pyrrhus achieving another costly victory at Asculum. Yet, despite these triumphs, the Roman Republic refused to yield. The Romans, with their seemingly endless supply of soldiers, replenished their ranks and pressed on.
Finally, in 275 BC, Pyrrhus, weary and depleted, withdrew from Italy. The war had drained his resources and sapped the morale of his army. The Romans, though battered, had endured.

Dois jovens foram apreendidos na quinta-feira (13) suspeitos de executarem a advogada Maria Letícia Miccichelli Gonçalves e o amigo dela em Itaperuna, no Noroeste Fluminense. O crime foi praticado em 28 de dezembro do ano passado.
A operação foi realizada por policiais civis da 143ª Delegacia de Polícia e por agentes do 29º Batalhão da Polícia Militar. De acordo com o delegado titular Carlos Augusto Guimarães, os mandados de busca e apreensão dos suspeitos foram cumpridos em suas residências.
"Durante cumprimento de dois mandados de busca domiciliar e de apreensão dos adolescentes expedidos judicialmente, localizamos os dois adolescentes, investigados pelos bárbaros e covardes crimes que chocaram a sociedade Itaperunense. Eles foram encontrados em casa. Na época do fato, eles tinham 17 anos e já estão com 18", afirmou o delegado titular Carlos Augusto Guimarães.
Durante as diligências, foi encontrada grande quantidade de droga escondida na casa de um dos adolescentes, o que indicaria a participação dele no tráfico de drogas local e a gravidade da conduta, segundo a polícia.
O crime
De acordo com o delegado adjunto, Gabriel Ramos, os adolescentes apreendidos foram investigados pela execução da advogada Maria Letícia Miccichelli Gonçalves e de um amigo dela.
"Um adolescente confessou ter efetuado os disparos que mataram as vítimas, utilizando pistolas de calibres 380 e 45, sem que tivessem qualquer chance de defesa. Entretanto, não informou os locais onde teria guardado o citado armamento", explicou o delegado Gabriel.
Já o segundo adolescente auxiliou a amarrar e amordaçar as vítimas, além de dirigir o carro utilizado para transportá-las até o local onde foram executadas, segundo a Polícia Civil.
"Após as execuções, a dupla de adolescentes decidiu atear fogo no veículo, entretanto, não conseguiram comprar gasolina e desistiram de tal intento", completou o delegado Carlos Augusto.
Ainda segundo as investigações, a motivação para os homicídios foi o fato de um dos adolescentes ter abordado as vítimas enquanto estas consumiam drogas e verificar que no celular da advogada tinha mensagens para pessoas ligadas ao grupo de traficantes rivais, o que caracteriza a motivação torpe dos crimes, de acordo com a Polícia Civil.
Os procedimentos formais neste caso são a apresentação dos infratores ao Ministério Público e à Vara da Infância e da Juventude de Itaperuna para depois serem encaminhados à respectiva unidade de internação.
O comandante do 29º BPM de Itaperuna, coronel Fabiano Souza, reforça a importância da população no combate aos crimes.
Ele destaca que informações anônimas sobre crimes ou localização de foragidos da Justiça devem ser passadas por meio de mensagens de texto ou áudio ao telefone do Batalhão pelo 0223822-1177. A Polícia Civil disponibiliza o WhatsApp da 143ª DP da cidade, que é o (22)98831-8027.
"É muito importante também no combate aos crimes a parceria das polícias Militar e Civil junto ao Ministério Público e o Poder Judiciário. Temos este grande diferencial na região somado ao apoio da população com denúncias anônimas", concluiu coronel Fabiano.

Homeless Veterans are going to get screwed
Nobody has talked about this but, the VA uses Grant Per Diem contracts to provide transitional housing for homeless veterans. This includes HUD & VASH vouchers to help pay for apartments. Something tells me these programs are going to have grants cancelled & the program killed to “stop wasteful spending”. A lot of veterans are going to get screwed simply because nobody knows what the GPD program is. My service chief didn’t know what it was about when I took over inspection duties from clinical staff.

Somehow I got pneumonia, went to the hospital and had to wait for 8 hours. Now on antibiotics, worst pain ever I’ve ever felt. Can’t even lay down, been having to sleep on the couch recliner part with feet up. Going to feel so good when I’m healed and can lay in bed again.
