Vissen en bodemdieren in Oosterschelde afgelopen 30 jaar afgenomen
In de afgelopen dertig jaar zijn de populaties van meer dan 37 kenmerkende vissen en bodemdieren in de Oosterschelde met gemiddeld 28 procent achteruitgegaan. Bij de bodemdieren gaat het bijvoorbeeld om zeesterren en verschillende soorten kreeften en kwallen.
De afgelopen dertig jaar houden hobbyduikers de vissoorten in de gaten voor het Monitoringsproject Onderwater Oever van Stichting ANEMOON. Het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) houdt aan de hand van die tellingen van de 37 diersoorten de toestand van de onderwaternatuur bij.
De Zeeuwse zeearm heeft een unieke biodiversiteit en is aangewezen als een Europees beschermd habitat. "De Oosterschelde is een gebied waar zoetwater en zoutwater bijna in elkaar overlopen", zegt CBS-woordvoerder Natuur Vinodh Lalta. "Na de Watersnoodramp in 1953 werden de Deltawerken gebouwd. Deze hebben gezorgd voor veranderingen in de natuur." Dat maakt de fauna in het gebied erg bijzonder, aldus Lalta.
De populatie van een groep van vijftien diersoorten in de Oosterschelde is tussen 1994 en 2023 met 60 procent achteruitgegaan. In de groep zitten kenmerkende soorten vissen zoals de schol en de gewone zeedonderpad, en schaal- en schelpdieren zoals de mossel en de Europese zeekreeft.
Klimaatverandering
Een van de oorzaken van de afname is de toenemende watertemperatuur in de zomer door klimaatverandering. De dieren trekken dan meer naar diepere wateren in de Noordzee. "Die komen in de wintermaanden niet meer terug", aldus Lalta. En een verandering in die populaties heeft invloed op de gehele voedselketen.
Van acht soorten, waaronder de purperslak en de platte oester, nemen de aantallen juist toe. Tien soorten zijn stabiel gebleven in de afgelopen dertig jaar en van vier soorten is de populatietrend onzeker.
"We zien door het warmer worden van het zeewater dat er ook een aantal exoten bijkomen vanuit zuidelijkere gebieden", zegt Lalta. Dat hoeft niet per se een slechte ontwikkeling te zijn, maar het kan wel. "Net zoals de rivierkreeftjes die geen natuurlijke vijand hebben in de Nederlandse sloten. Die vreten alles op."
Ook de Nederlandse staalindustrie heeft invloed op de onderzeepopulaties. De dijken langs de Zeeuwse wateren zijn versterkt met basaltblokken. Op die stenen leven diersoorten zoals zeeanemonen, kreeftachtigen en schelpdieren. Deze soorten zijn grotendeels afhankelijk van deze ondergrond, maar kreeftachtigen vinden holtes tussen de rotsen steeds minder snel. Dit komt doordat deze vol zitten met staalslakken, een restproduct van de staalindustrie.
