「シネフィル」が一定数いた頃は、結構知られた名前ではあったが、中原康と似て、かなり「バイアス」のかかったイメージが流布していたけれども、題材も守備範囲が広く、洒落たスタイルの才人の一人と記憶している。
少し前のドイツ映画の日本語題名『女は二度決断する』は、川島の『女は二度生まれる』（若尾文子主演）の引用だろう。（ドイツ語原タイトルは「Aus dem Nichts」。）。
1957年の「幕末太陽傳」（フランキー堺主演）は、元来ラストを一種のメタシアトリカルな構想にしようとした、ということで、一時「前衛」の先駆として、持ち上げられたりしたが、正直今日、映画として数ある川島作品の中で「上」に入るとは思えない。これには石原裕次郎という「しょうもない男」が出演していることへの私の偏見もある。
また「怪優」伊藤雄之助の出演している映画の「ハズレ」が少ないのは事実であろう。ただ、仲代達矢と同じく、「誰」を演じても「伊藤雄之助」になるという傾向もある。これも「怪優」たる所以であろう。
川島雄三は、筋委縮性側索硬化症により1963年に45歳にて死去。
ただし、日本映画の黄金時代に完全に重なったので、「未完の人生」という感じはしない。 [参照]
