Tal vez debería hablar de Capitalismo Responsable o, tal vez, eso no exista!
Después mucha gente se pregunta ¿por qué ya no se le cree a los medios?
Lo de la cantidad de muertos, por desastres ambientales, del pasado comparado con ahora, me suena trucho pero debería buscar algo más!
La sensación que me queda, después de leer la editorial, es que no hay solución dentro del capitalismo, deberíamos pensar cómo cambiar nuestro modelo de vida, cómo darle una esperança a nuestras/nuestros sucesoras/sucesores!El desafío del ambientalismo responsableEl mundo es cada vez más consciente de los riesgos del cambio climático, pero es necesario considerar el alto costo de la transición energética, que afecta a la economía y a la sociedad.
Hace dos o tres generaciones, los ambientalistas necesitaban combatir el desinterés y la negación sobre el cambio climático. Tuvieron éxito. De hecho, demasiado. Según una encuesta de la OCDE, alrededor del 60% de los habitantes de los países ricos cree que es “probable o muy probable” que el cambio climático conduzca al fin de la humanidad. No hay ninguna sorpresa en ello. La retórica del “Armagedón” está en todas partes en los medios tradicionales y las redes sociales. Pero el miedo es un mal consejero, y el riesgo hoy es otro tipo de negacionismo: la negación económica.
Como dijo a Estadão el presidente de Vale, Gustavo Pimenta , aunque las empresas en general están siguiendo políticas de descarbonización porque “estos caminos son necesarios”, “varios líderes se están dando cuenta de que no es posible descarbonizar ciertas industrias porque el costo es desproporcionado”. Según Pimenta, “se hizo un movimiento de definición de metas y objetivos ultra agresivo y, tal vez en algunos escenarios, irrealista, dada la realidad de algunas industrias”. En otras palabras, la realidad se ha impuesto: el coste de la transición energética sigue siendo muy elevado.
Los activistas argumentan que se debería gastar aún más para evitar la catástrofe inminente, que generaría pobreza y hambre a gran escala. Pero nuevos estudios están aclarando este escenario, indicando que el aumento de las temperaturas, aunque problemático, no necesariamente será apocalíptico. Las muertes por desastres naturales han disminuido drásticamente, de casi 500.000 al año hace cien años a menos de 10.000 hoy. Los economistas Richard Tol y William Nordhaus, expertos en cambio climático y energía, calculan que, en el escenario pesimista de un aumento de 3°C en 2100, la pérdida para el PIB mundial sería del orden de 1,9% a 3,1%. Otro estudio, publicado en la revista Nature , estima que sin el cambio climático, la disponibilidad de alimentos aumentaría un 51% en 2100; Con ellos, el 49%. En otras palabras, el calentamiento global es un problema grave, pero, por ahora, no es el fin del mundo.
No parece casualidad, por tanto, que tanto los ejecutivos brasileños citados por el CEO de Vale como los votantes de todo el mundo se estén dando cuenta de que los costos de revertir el cambio climático son excesivos y, además, ineficaces. Los políticos y activistas insisten en que la energía solar y eólica son más baratas que los combustibles fósiles. Pero sólo son así cuando hay sol y viento. Las baterías disponibles en el mundo serían suficientes para almacenar la energía necesaria durante sólo unos minutos. Para ampliarlas sería necesario extraer cantidades colosales de minerales como el litio o el níquel, con terribles impactos ambientales.
Con subsidios masivos a las energías renovables y enormes cargas sobre el costo de vida, los países ricos han reducido sus emisiones de carbono, pero éstas siguen creciendo año tras año, porque el resto del mundo necesita combustibles fósiles para erradicar la pobreza. La ironía es que los activistas que exigen un gasto más exorbitante en las políticas climáticas actuales y el fin inmediato de los combustibles fósiles son a menudo las personas que más expresan su indignación por las “injusticias sociales”.
Un precio del carbono bien calculado puede incentivar la reducción gradual de las emisiones, distribuyendo los costos y evitando perturbaciones económicas. Lo más importante es que el gasto en energía renovable ineficiente se canalice hacia medidas de adaptación y hacia investigación y desarrollo. Cuando la energía renovable sea tan barata y eficiente como los combustibles fósiles, la transición se producirá de forma natural. Como dijo el presidente de Vale, “lo que todo el mundo dice es que hay que ser realistas”, es decir, “no podemos prometer algo que el accionista no aceptará porque la sociedad no estará dispuesta a pagar”. A pesar de ello, sin embargo, “ese futuro llegará”.
El desafío para los ambientalistas responsables ya no es concienciar al mundo sobre los daños causados por el cambio climático. Esto ya ha sucedido. El verdadero desafío para nuestra generación es encontrar el equilibrio adecuado entre reducir las emisiones y minimizar el impacto socioeconómico. Esto apenas ha comenzado.O Estado de Sâo Paulo
