A União aceitou o pedido do Ministério Público Federal (MPF) para mudar o nome da 4ª Brigada de Infantaria Leve de Montanha, no Bairro Mariano Procópio, em Juiz de Fora. Conforme o MPF, a denominação da infantaria faz referência ao dia 31 de março, data em que as tropas saíram da cidade mineira para instaurar o golpe militar de 1964.

Além disso, a expressão "revolução democrática" também será retirada de documentos e sites oficiais. A informação foi confirmada ao g1 pela União e pelo MPF. Agora, as manifestações dependem da sentença judicial, que poderá indicar, ainda, o novo nome da brigada.
Em nota, a Advocacia Geral da União (AGU) informou que apresentou manifestação concordando com os pedidos relativos à alteração do nome da Brigada e à supressão da expressão “Revolução Democrática”.
As medidas fazem parte de uma Ação Civil Pública, instaurada em abril de 2024, em que o MPF argumenta que o nome do local desinforma e relativiza a ditadura, o que pode favorecer a repetição.
Agora, o Ministério Público Federal pede à Justiça Federal que homologue o reconhecimento dos pedidos pela União e determine a reparação ao dano causado à coletividade pela desinformação propagada e destaca que o "ato ilícito de homenagem e apologia ao golpe militar não é algo danoso que aconteceu no passado, mas continua ocorrendo neste momento, de forma permanente".

Na ação, os principais pedidos do MPF são os de revogação de atos de homenagem, anulação dos nomes de sites e documentos oficiais, além da remoção, das dependências do Exército, do monumento onde está inscrita a data.
A ação também pede que a União seja condenada a excluir a expressão 'revolução democrática' ou expressões de exaltar o golpe militar, de qualquer site ou documento oficial, para se referir ao histórico de atuação da brigada.

Também foi solicitado que militares da 4ª Brigada de Infantaria Leve de Montanha façam um curso sobre o que foi o golpe militar e os direitos humanos violados e que no local seja criado um espaço de memória, com uma placa informando que, no dia 31 de março de 1964, tropas militares partiram de Juiz de Fora, e deflagraram o golpe de Estado que interrompeu a democracia no Brasil, para que gerações futuras possam conhecer e compreender a gravidade dos fatos.
Em nota enviada em novembro de 2024, a União alegou que já oferece curso de Direitos Humanos em sua grade de formação, mas se opôs à criação do espaço de memória no local.

O inquérito civil foi instaurado após a publicação do jornal Folha de São Paulo, informando que há na antiga sede da 4ª Região Militar letreiro em homenagem ao 31 de março, com mobilização das tropas do general Olympio Mourão Filho, que deram início ao golpe militar no Brasil.
No dia 31 de março de 2024, quando o ato completou 60 anos, o Comando do Exército divulgou comunicado que informou o intuito de manter a reverência, evitando rotular o evento como golpe militar. Argumentou também que “os acontecimentos representam um fato histórico de 60 anos atrás”.
Entretanto, o MPF afirma que o que realmente ocorreu foi que, a partir de Juiz de Fora, as tropas do Exército precipitaram um golpe de Estado que, em afronta à Constituição de 1946, tomou o poder pela força e anulou ao Estado de Direito vigente.
A ação ainda cita que essa homenagem é irregular, uma vez que o ato normativo do Ministério da Defesa, que proíbe a aprovação de nomes de personalidades vivas ou ações, locais, datas e tradições controversas.
