A bunch of girls from other schools are convinced to transfer to this new, supposedly fancy school by being lied to about various things about the schools they are currently at. However, when they get there it turns out the school isn't as great as it was claimed with a low quality of life.
In enters Sensei, who hears about this and decides to help. He does his best to try to improve the quality of life of the students, and while it does work for a day or two, after a week things are back to where they started.
Upon investigation, it turns out that not only is the school not an officially recognized school, but the student council consists of 1 student, the very same one that convinced the others to come here, and is actively making things bad. So after some plot, Sensei calls in the help of Valkyrie and RABBIT Platoon to take down the student council president, having to fight through her supporters along the way.
After that, he forms an entirely new student council with some of the girls he helped along the way and officially gets the school recognized as an official one (Opening the way for him to start working on getting SRT reopened)
I'm just spitballing here, but imagine :doge_laugh:

The Supreme Court is poised to make it easier for non-minority plaintiffs to file workplace discrimination claims against their employers. In oral arguments on Wednesday in Ames v. Ohio Department of Youth Services, a clear majority of the justices appeared ready to rewrite a judicial test that made white, straight, and/or male plaintiffs meet a higher evidentiary threshold in Title VII cases than other litigants.“So all you want for this case is a really short opinion that says discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, whether it’s because you’re gay or because you’re straight, is prohibited, and the rules are the same whichever way that goes?” Justice Brett Kavanaugh asked Xiao Wang, who represented an Ohio civil servant who claimed she faced discrimination because she is straight.Oral arguments can be unpredictable on final outcomes, but a justice asking a lawyer how to write the opinion is generally seen as a good sign for that side’s chances. “That’s right, Your Honor,” Wang replied. “I think you’d also have to say ‘reverse’ or ‘vacate,’” she added, to chuckles from the courtroom. “I want to look out for my client here a little bit.” The question will instead likely be how the court decides in Ames’s favor, and whether it will make Title VII cases harder to pursue in general. The plaintiff, Marlean Ames, joined the Ohio Department of Youth Services in 2004. After starting as an executive secretary, she was promoted multiple times and received positive job-performance reviews along the way as a project administrator. In 2019, Ames applied to a bureau chief position in the agency. Two supervisors interviewed Ames for the position but did not hire her for it. Two other applicants who were interviewed for the job did not get hired either. Eight months later, according to Ames, a supervisor hired someone she personally knew for the job who had neither applied nor interviewed for it.Ames was then removed from her then-current job as a program administrator and given the choice between demotion back to executive secretary or dismissal. She chose demotion. Ames attributed her sudden career downturn to her sexual orientation. She is straight, the hiring supervisor and the person hired for the bureau chief job are both lesbians, and the person who replaced her as program administrator is gay.“In her place, the Department hired a gay man who, much like the gay woman hired for the Bureau Chief position, was ‘neither qualified’ nor had ‘formally applied’ for the role,” Ames’s lawyers claimed in their brief for the court. “Moreover, this man had told many coworkers that he ‘wanted Ms. Ames’s job,’ including his first supervisor, his second supervisor, Ames herself, and Ames’s supervisor.” To avoid violating the department’s promotion guidelines, Ames claimed that the employee quit his then-current job and was hired for Ames’s old job the next day.Ames filed a lawsuit against the department under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which generally makes it illegal for American employers to discriminate against workers or job applicants on the basis of their “race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.” In the 2022 case Bostock v. Clayton County, the Supreme Court held that “sex” covered sexual orientation and gender identity, thereby extending Title VII to gay and transgender workers. Both the district court and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected her claims. The prevailing legal test for Title VII claims comes from the 1973 case McDonnell Douglas v. Green. In its broadest terms, a plaintiff first alleges a prima facie claim of discrimination—that is to say, a woman says that a company hired or promoted less qualified men instead of her. Employers can counter that argument with evidence that they had a non-discriminatory reason for their decision. A plaintiff must then show that the neutral reason is merely pretextual. In Ames’s case, the appeals court held that Ames’s claim failed at the first step. A plaintiff can claim prima facie discrimination either with direct evidence—an employer telling an applicant that he didn’t hire her because she’s a woman, for example—or circumstantial evidence. Members of minority groups that have historically experienced discrimination can cite those “background circumstances” as circumstantial evidence. Members of a majority group—white, straight, male, and so on—cannot.“Put differently, if Ames were gay and the employees hired in preference of her were not, she would have established the elements necessary for her prima-facie case,” her lawyers argued in their brief for the court. “But because Ames falls on the majority-group side of the majority/minority fault line, she has no legal recourse.”The state of Ohio does not really contest this argument. That is not particularly surprising. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is an outspoken opponent of diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. He drew national attention last month for threatening Costco after the company declined to join other major corporations in ending its DEI policies after President Donald Trump’s second inauguration. It would be a stretch to call Ohio’s briefing in this case non-adversarial. But Yost’s office made little effort to defend the status quo beyond blandly describing the court’s precedents and stating that the Sixth Circuit had correctly applied them. Justice Elena Kagan chided Elliot Gaisler, the solicitor general of Ohio, for raising extraneous points beyond the core issue that was before the justices.“You say you agree with your friends on the question that we took this case to decide,” Kagan said. “The question presented is whether a majority-group plaintiff has to show something more than a minority-group plaintiff, here, whether a straight person has to show more than a gay person. Everybody over here says no. You say no too. That was the question that we took the case to decide.”Arguing in favor of the background-circumstances test—though not at oral arguments, since it was not a party in the case—was the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, which filed a friend-of-the-court brief. It urged the court to keep the background-circumstances test intact and claimed that Ames “asks this Court to interpret Title VII in a way that ignores the realities of this country’s persisting legacy of discrimination in evaluating disparate treatment claims.”“Majority-group plaintiffs are, of course, protected by Title VII,” the group explained. “They simply cannot rely on this country’s persisting legacy of discrimination targeting minority-group plaintiffs as a relevant factor in support of their claims because they do not share that legacy. Properly understood, this is all that the ‘background circumstances’ inquiry (or whatever label a court chooses to give it) should mean.”The organization also disputed suggestions that majority-group plaintiffs prevailed less often in Title VII cases. “The reality is that employment discrimination cases are generally very difficult to win, for everyone,” it explained. “But studies of outcomes of Title VII lawsuits reveal that majority-group plaintiffs are often more likely to prevail. According to a study of intersectional Title VII claims where plaintiffs alleged that they experienced discrimination because of two or more protected categories, white men were three times more likely to win on their claims than non-white women.”Those arguments are unlikely to persuade the court’s conservative supermajority, however. Under Chief Justice John Roberts, the Supreme Court has sought to eradicate any hint of what it describes as “racial preferences” in American law. His majority opinion in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard University, the court’s landmark 2023 ruling against affirmative action in college admissions, denounced what he described as a “judiciary that picks winners and losers based on the color of their skin.”While the court appears almost certain to side with Ames, the larger question will be how the justices actually write the decision. Their answer could have far-reaching implications. One concern is that the court’s ruling could further limit the type of circumstantial evidence that plaintiffs could bring in any Title VII case, whether brought by a member of a minority or majority group. That would risk stalling legitimate claims before they could be pursued at the very first step of the McDonnell Douglas test.To that end, the Ohio attorney general’s office warned against making it easier to bring Title VII claims in general. “Maintaining a robust threshold step [...] ensures that many specious or vexatious Title VII lawsuits die on the desk of busy plaintiffs’ lawyers,” it argued, paraphrasing from an unrelated lower-court opinion, “and that ‘American workplaces’ remain ‘lively engines of innovation and competition,’ not ‘sclerotic bureaucracies whose prime directive is to avoid litigation rather than to achieve excellence.’”At one point, Justice Amy Coney Barrett invited Wang to argue against the proposition that a ruling in Ames’s favor was “just going to throw the door wide open to Title VII suits because now everybody can say, hey, this was discrimination on the basis of race, gender, et cetera?” Wang noted that such a flood was unlikely because less substantive cases are likely already filtered out by the time the courts reach the summary judgment stage, as Ames did. That will likely comfort any members of the court who want to erase perceived discrimination from the law, but don’t want to make it easier for workers to challenge it in the workplace.

A central task right now for the Trump administration ought to be figuring out how to avoid a widely predicted economic downturn. Instead, the Trump administration is blaming it in advance on former President Joe Biden. That was the theme of Scott Bessent’s first major address as Treasury secretary.Bessent has been dealt a difficult hand. The nonprofit Conference Board, which is nobody’s idea of a resistance cell, reported earlier this month: “The unpredictability of the current administration’s policies looms large over the outlook. While the US economy is set to start 2025 on strong footing after a year of surprisingly robust growth, a combination of proposed policies will likely weigh on growth and leave inflation elevated as the year progresses.”Those “proposed policies” are Trump’s unpredictable tariffs, his impoundment of federal appropriations, and the prospect of significantly higher budget deficits due to planned tax cuts. Output in goods and services is at a 17-month low, consumer confidence is dropping like a stone, and long-term inflation expectations are higher than they’ve been in 30 years. The bond market, meanwhile, is calling bullshit on Elon Musk’s promised debt reduction, and Warren Buffett is hoarding cash in anticipation of a bear market. Except for dissatisfaction in the bond market, none of these problems existed before Biden left office, and while the benchmark 10-year Treasury rate has been falling these past few days, which is good, the reason is that investors are fleeing the stock market, which is bad. There are things the Trump administration could do to fix this. Trump could abandon his dream of creating an External Revenue Department and stop trying to replace taxes with tariffs. That ambition explains why Trump’s threatened tariffs are so terrifyingly arbitrary; he just wants the revenue. Alternatively, Trump could stop his similarly arbitrary impoundment schemes. Or, he could cancel his planned tax increase of somewhere between $5 trillion and $11 trillion over the next decade.Trump could do these things, but he won’t, which leaves Bessent the unhappy task of explaining away the coming bad economy rather than creating a good one. Bessent’s pitch in Tuesday’s address, which he gave at the Australian embassy in Washington, was that we’re already in a recession, that Biden put us there, and the reason we didn’t notice was that it’s been what Bessent calls “a private sector recession.”Like Odysseus sailing past the Island of the Sirens as they sing enchantments, Bessent has some formidable economic indicators to steer around. Inflation dropped from 9.1 percent in 2022 to 3 percent in January 2025. Unemployment fell from 6.3 percent the month Trump ended his first term to 4 percent the month Biden ended his only term. And GDP growth, factoring in inflation, rose from negative 3.5 percent in 2020 (Trump’s last year) to 2.8 percent in 2024 (Biden’s last year). But those are just metrics, and metrics lie! Here’s how Bessent put it: “The previous administration’s over-reliance on excessive government spending and overbearing regulation left us with an economy that may have exhibited some reasonable metrics but ultimately was brittle underneath, and heading for an unstable equilibrium.”Oh, please. The economy doesn’t care—and neither should you—whether it’s Joe Biden or General Motors or the Man in the Moon that boosts GDP, creates jobs, and lowers inflation. And for Bessent to conjure a “private sector recession” requires accounting tricks that would make Allen Weisselberg blush. You can’t concoct a recession just by removing government, so instead Bessent objects that job growth is concentrated in “government and government-adjacent sectors” (emphasis mine). That little bit of number-fudging allows Bessent to discard the entire health care sector, which is a problem because health care happens to be the single largest industry in the United States. As I’ve argued elsewhere, “health care kind of is the economy.” It employs 20 million people, more than any other industry sector, and it constitutes nearly 18 percent of GDP. Does the United States spend too much of its GDP on health care? Probably. Our peer nations typically spend half as much per person. But that’s mainly because too much health spending in the United States (about 30 percent) is private. Government is much better than the private sector at controlling medical costs, and if the government’s share of health expenditures grew from its current 45 percent to more like 80 percent, health spending’s slice of GDP would shrink, making room in Bessent’s GDP pie chart for more economic growth that isn’t government-adjacent. Conservatives like Bessent pretend not to believe that government-funded health care is more cost-effective than privately-funded health care, but this is well known among health economists, and it’s why Republicans fought tooth and nail to prevent Obamacare from creating a public option. They knew private insurers couldn’t compete with a government insurer on price. To model a private economy that’s in recession, Bessent limits it mainly to manufacturing, metals, mining, and information technology. Employment in these sectors either shrank or failed to grow over the past year, Bessent said. But even that jerry-rigged calculation is misleading. Manufacturing employment, the component in this mix that’s of greatest public concern, dipped a little last year, but more saliently it grew under Biden from about 12 million to about 13 million. (Manufacturing employment fell by 188,000 under Trump.) Overall, Axios points out, the private sector (as defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, not Bessent) created a monthly average last year of 130,000 jobs, which doesn’t sound like a recession to me.Can Trump end Bessent’s “private-sector recession?” Don’t bet on it. The trade war Trump’s determined to start will devastate United States manufacturing, and any strengthening of the dollar that Bessent predicts will result from higher tariffs will serve to reduce United States exports (because a stronger dollar makes United States goods more expensive abroad). “This is about more than just reducing the fiscal deficit,” Bessent said. That comment can’t have pleased the bond market. The bond market is the economy’s most deficit-hating neighborhood, and when it hears glib phrases like “just reducing the fiscal deficit” it reaches for its wallet. “Government overspending,” Bessent continued, “brings distortions in the economy that inhibit dynamism and limit growth to a designated subset of favorite sectors.” That’s just ideology-driven gibberish, and an insult to Elon Musk, who took $38 billion in government investments and turned it into $358 billion. Bessent’s remark about inhibiting dynamism also sounds to me like an opening salvo against the Inflation Reduction Act’s $400 billion investment in green manufacturing, most of it headed to red states, that Trump is trying to claw back. Bessent got the Treasury job because he was the only clubbable Wall Streeter Trump could find who would drink the Kool-Aid on tariffs. “Tariffs can increase U.S. industrial capacity, create and protect U.S. jobs, and improve our national security,” Bessent said. When narrowly targeted, that might be true, but as I write Trump is threatening a 25 percent tariff on the European Union (which, I bet you didn’t know, was “formed to screw the United States”). One way or another, Trump is determined to start a trade war that will reduce industrial capacity, eliminate jobs, and (because the target is America’s strongest allies) weaken our national security. Bessent further said tariffs “can be an important source of government revenue, which can help fund investments that benefit American families and companies.” Anybody who talks about tariffs as an important source of government revenue is bent on imposing an economy-wrecking level of trade protection (or, perhaps in Bessent’s case, is pretending to be). Also, what are these “investments that benefit American families and companies”? Didn’t Bessent just tell us that an economy grown dependent on government spending is “brittle underneath, and heading for an unstable equilibrium”? Only when built by Democrats, I guess.Jared Bernstein, who was Biden’s chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, recently noted that every time Trump or someone in his government suggests that tariffs are a marvelous source of government revenue, that person is admitting what Trump denied throughout the 2024 campaign—that tariffs are a sales tax. Kamala Harris was right; they are a sales tax. They are a means to displace progressive taxation with regressive taxation. Viva William McKinley! If an economic downturn is coming, the only good thing likely to come from it is reduced income inequality (albeit temporary), because recessions hit rich people harder than the rest of us (also temporarily; the rich recover faster). But Bessent won’t even give up that crumb. The Trump economy is shaping up to be a turd, and Bessent’s inaugural speech bids fair to make him turd-polisher-in-chief. God knows why he’d want the job.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s confirmation as secretary of health and human services, alongside President Trump’s executive order launching the “Make America Healthy Again Commission,” or MAHA, signal that the Trump regime intends to radically reshape the nation’s mental health policy. Their agenda presents itself as a critique of the over-medicalization of mental and social distress, calling for an investigation into the supposed “threat” posed by psychiatric medications. By doing so, it purports to challenge psychiatry’s overreliance on pharmaceuticals, in place of addressing the root social and economic causes underlying much of the human suffering known today as mental illness. At first glance, their mission statement echoes long-standing progressive critiques of psychiatry by the fields known as social and critical psychiatry, which argue that psychiatric diagnoses often obscure the structural causes of suffering—poverty, social isolation, racism, homelessness, and exploitative labor conditions, for example—by reducing them to “brain diseases.” This transformation of social problems into medical diagnoses in turn feeds pharmaceutical profits and pathologizes oppressed groups. Meanwhile, an intense focus on neural networks rather than on human needs for social networks often exacerbates suffering, rather than alleviating it. As a group of eminent psychiatrists recently observed in The Lancet, over the last two decades, “most metrics reflecting mental ill health have worsened in the USA, despite having more mental health resources per person than almost any other country … this status quo is the real crisis.” Despite the superficial resonance between MAHA and progressive critiques of psychiatry, the differences between them could not be more pronounced—nor more consequential. And an untold number of patients could get ground up in the gears of these distinctions. Today, roughly a quarter of all U.S. adults take at least one prescribed psychiatric medication—a massive increase compared to prior decades, even as there have been no notable improvements in the effectiveness of available treatments, which remain disappointingly limited. Meanwhile, rates of death by suicide, overdose, and alcohol continue to increase, with a striking 37 percent increase in suicide rates between 2000 and 2018—the same period in which rates of antidepressant use in the U.S. more than doubled. Clearly, psychiatric diagnoses and treatments are—by themselves—woefully inadequate responses to the sea of psychic suffering and accompanying nihilism plaguing American society.Social and critical psychiatry respond to this reality by demanding investments in public systems for nonmedical social care that are significant enough to prevent much of the current need for psychiatrists and psychiatric drugs. Trump and Kennedy, by contrast, respond to it by seeking to dismantle public care systems altogether, plotting major cuts to Medicaid, the Indian Health Service, food assistance, and a plethora of other essential programs that threaten to leave those in greatest need with nothing at all. This is a strategy to abandon the most exploited members of our society, exacerbating their suffering and hastening their premature deaths. Put bluntly, the MAHA agenda—irrespective of the varying intentions of its supporters, who include millions of diverse people failed by our current systems—is quickly being turned by the Trump administration into a eugenics campaign in the guise of reform: a cynical strategy to grant symbolic recognition of widespread pain and anger at failing U.S. mental health care as a perverse means of enabling material redistribution of resources away from redress of that suffering and instead into the pockets of the rich.As part of this ruse, RFK Jr. is drawing on long-standing traditions of critiquing psychiatry for its many inadequacies—traditions often misleadingly grouped together under the term “anti-psychiatry.” These have historically spanned socialist, liberal, libertarian, and, now, fascist ideologies. Although each of the distinct threads of so-called anti-psychiatry have previously shared common ground in rejecting coercive psychiatric practices, their political goals sharply diverge. Left-wing and liberal critiques have sought to replace biomedical reductionism with expansive, community-based systems of care. Libertarian and right-wing critiques have used psychiatry’s failures as a pretext to withdraw both medical and social support altogether, with little or no regard for what comes next.Kennedy’s agenda, while highly opportunistic and lacking in ideological consistency, is best understood as an extension of this libertarian and right-wing legacy. He conjoins planned abandonment of poor and disabled groups with a neoliberal strategy of privatizing essential services. By thereby compelling individuals, charitable organizations, or public insurance to pay for-profit companies for basic care, corporations and wealthy individuals like Kennedy can extract maximum wealth from these same populations, even as they slowly suffer and die—whether from suicide, overdose, or preventable diseases born of homelessness or incarceration. This approach can be traced to Thomas Szasz, a libertarian psychiatrist who, in the 1960s, famously argued that mental illness was a “myth” used to justify state control over individuals. His work has been used to argue against not only involuntary psychiatric hospitalization and treatment but also mental health infrastructure in general and even the very idea of public care services.RFK Jr.’s agenda echoes this Szaszian legacy while going considerably beyond it into what should be named for what it is: fascist anti-psychiatry. His repeated baseless claims that antidepressant medications are the cause of school shootings and his advocacy for government “wellness farms” featuring forced labor—particularly targeting Black children—as a supposed alternative to current psychiatric treatment, for example, conjoin the worst of anti-psychiatry with police-state paradigms reminiscent of policies from Nazi Germany and Chinese “reeducation camps” to ongoing American mass incarceration. This purely destructive program does not seek to replace overburdened, profit-driven mental health systems with better ones nor to make psychiatric care more effective. Instead, it aims to strip away mental health care while replacing it with, at best, nothing or, at worst, involuntary work camps and yet more profiteering via snake-oil supplements.Despite the hopes of many of its supporters, MAHA as it is now being wielded by the Trump regime is not a genuine answer to our present problems, but neither is simply falling back on a defense of the status quo. Mental health professionals, public health leaders, and American society writ large can no longer ignore serious, evidence-backed critiques of current psychiatric norms—nor can we afford to delay acting upon them. Continuing to do so will fuel right-wing plans that, unless we rally to stop the Trump regime, will soon leave us with little care infrastructure left to reform. To formulate effective opposition to Trump and Kennedy, we should revisit constructive criticisms of psychiatry that emerged alongside Szasz but that developed through a different trajectory, informed by recognition of the harm inflicted by intertwined colonial and capitalist systems. Frantz Fanon, R.D. Laing, David Cooper, and Michel Foucault, for example, challenged the medicalization of mental distress, but unlike Szasz, they recognized psychiatry’s failings as symptoms of oppressive economic and social policies rather than simply a sign of state overreach.Fanon analyzed the ways in which psychiatric institutions reinforced racial and imperial domination, emphasizing the “sociogenesis” of mental disorders—that is, the way that systems of colonial oppression give rise to psychiatric conditions that can only be effectively treated by addressing the political conditions behind them. Laing and Cooper sought to replace coercive mental health care with community-based alternatives that value each individual’s unique lived experience over homogenizing diagnostic categories. Foucault traced how psychiatry emerged as a tool for pathologizing behaviors that threatened conservative social order and for isolating “deviant” individuals to quash their subversive potential and freedom from restrictive norms.Throughout his adult life, Foucault—a gay man who lived through an era in which all nonheterosexualities were defined by psychiatrists as mental diseases—advocated for alternative, de-pathologizing forms of social care. He believed that, rather than suppressing individual idiosyncracies, true care for one another must instead support the richness of human diversity and nonconformity to standardized notions of health, sexuality, pleasure, and capitalist value while also addressing the very real suffering that so many people are experiencing. Despite their many differences, these thinkers agreed that mental distress was inseparable from broader political and economic structures. They did not reject mental health care in general nor psychiatry specifically but instead called for their transformation. They argued for public investments in social support systems, nonmedical social care, and the recognition of psychic suffering as a fundamentally political phenomenon that, alongside clinical care, required political solutions. Only once this truth was fully embraced could psychiatry as a discipline fulfill its positive potential rather than continue to serve—regardless of individual psychiatrists’ intent—as handmaiden of racism and capitalism by obscuring the root causes of mental illness. This left-wing tradition insists on the need for more care, not less—but care that is collective rather than individualistic, public rather than profit-driven, and centrally focused on addressing the political-economic determinants of health. Right-wing anti-psychiatry, by contrast, uses critiques of psychiatry to advocate for the withdrawal of care to accelerate the “survival of the fittest,” in a game rigged in favor of white men with inherited wealth made off the backs of working-class people and violently subjugated Black and brown populations. The evolving MAHA agenda represents the latest iteration of this trend, offering nothing but yet more punishment for the poor alongside lucrative (and still ineffective) private “wellness” programs and potions for the rich. Why, then, are Trump and RFK Jr. so compelling to so many people? Like U.S. health capitalism in general, our mental health institutions and psychiatric norms have betrayed millions of people and caused thousands of deaths. We have bankrupted, gaslit, and then abandoned countless suffering individuals and families—often while criticizing them for showing insufficient deference and gratitude for our medical expertise. Psychiatry as a field has responded to poverty, public disinvestment from community support, and deep social isolation with a for-profit mental health paradigm that treats the nation’s distress as if it’s a product of a “disordered brain” rather than a response to ongoing inequality, exploitative and dehumanizing jobs, childhood maltreatment, and mass incarceration and its routine use of rape and torture, for example. The enormous reservoir of desperation, confusion, and anger this has generated is what now allows opportunists like Trump and RFK Jr. to manipulate millions into supporting their destructive agenda via false promises of cure and freedom. To counter this, U.S. mental health professionals and allied politicians must acknowledge, validate, and own our collective accountability for the suffering upon which Trump and Kennedy are—not unlike their pharmaceutical industry counterparts—preying. We must also conjoin such symbolic recognition with a materially transformative response to this suffering rather than allow MAHA to continue benefiting from its current status as the only widely known alternative to the failed status quo.An honest, ethical response to the limitations and corruption of psychiatry must affirm the rightness of the public’s anger while insisting on constructive solutions. Rather than allowing rage to be channeled toward dismantling public health and undercutting responsible use of psychiatric medications as one aspect of care, we must redirect it toward policies that create more equitable, relationship-based, and effective care systems. This means investing in large-scale community care worker and peer support programs and non-police crisis response systems. It also means fully funding and robustly staffing public schools and childcare programs that are essential for child development and parental well-being. And it means ensuring universal access to mental health support, not only through psychiatry and therapy but through direct provision of economic security, housing, and social connection. The role, profits, and power of the psychiatric industry will slowly shrink if we successfully implement preventative support systems of this kind. And that’s good. It would be a sign of successful mental health policy, as a truly healthy society would have comparatively little—although still some—need for psychiatrists or psychiatric medications. But simply stripping people of access to medications and psychiatric care, as Kennedy and Trump threaten to do, without addressing the underlying suffering to which these treatments are a response would provoke a public health disaster. While the rich would continue to pay privately for whatever they may need or want and would turn to the black market as needed, approximately 100 million Americans who are uninsured or underinsured would be cut off from essential care. Millions would suffer from dangerous medication withdrawal, sudden withdrawal of social connections upon which they’ve come to depend, and sudden increases in need for expensive and often traumatic hospitalization. Many would likely die by suicide or overdose. At its base, the debate over the future of mental health is not a matter of scientific disagreement; it is a political struggle over the meaning of care and of society itself. Kennedy’s agenda presents a vision in which mental suffering is met with stigma, suspicion, and withdrawal of resources together with punishment and coercion. Progressives must present an alternative: one that meets people where they are, validates their suffering, and responds with robust public investment in care systems that address root economic and social causes while also guaranteeing universal rights to medical and psychiatric care. This is not a debate about psychiatry—and those of us internal to the field must not let the narcissism of small differences prevent us from uniting to do what basic ethical and political responsibility requires of us at this crucial historical juncture. We are in a fight over whether we will, as a society, choose solidarity or abandonment and whether we will meet suffering with care or with cruelty. The future of both mental health and democracy in America depends on our answer.

In the months leading up to the 2024 presidential election, political ethics watchers, an endangered breed, worried about the increasing number of ways in which Donald Trump seemed to be for sale. “Trump keeps creating avenues for people to quietly give him money,” ran a Washington Post opinion headline, referring to the glitzy, $100,000 watches that Trump had recently presented for sale—purchasable with bitcoin.Steve Benen, an MSNBC columnist, suggested a dark scenario: “A hypothetical wealthy donor wants to give the former president a $100,000 donation—far in excess of the legal limit—so he or she buys an expensive watch. At that point, the nominee could take his cut and write a comparable check in support of his candidacy, since there is no legal limit on what candidates can spend on their own campaigns.”In the era of unlimited super PAC giving—when Elon Musk could throw hundreds of millions of dollars; the influence of X, the social media platform he owns; and his personal celebrity behind Team Trump with barely a regulatory hiccup—these concerns seemed practically quaint. Trump-themed nonfungible tokens, golden sneakers, gaudy watches, and other branded tchotchkes were small-time stuff, new incarnations of the steaks, the university, the airline, and many other failed products that Trump hawked as a private citizen. Compared to the $2 billion that his son-in-law Jared Kushner’s private equity firm received from the Saudi sovereign wealth fund—along with a nine-figure bailout from the Qatari government for his deeply indebted Manhattan office tower at 666 Fifth Avenue—it seemed that Trump had failed to fully monetize the power of his office. But Trump was already going after bigger prizes, pursuing potentially huge paydays while his donors and advisers developed plans to eliminate any legal, regulatory, and judicial obstacles still standing in the way of the ascendant American oligarchy. The new Trump administration wouldn’t just be open for business. With the aid of Musk’s DOGE wrecking ball, the administration would create the perfect environment for graft, self-dealing, and lucrative influence-peddling. And it would be legal, at least some of it. For now.One of Trump’s biggest business deals in recent history took a couple of years of waiting and some financial engineering, but it was worth it. In March 2024, after surviving a Biden administration investigation involving the Securities and Exchange Commission, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security into the financing of its special purpose acquisition company merger, Trump Media & Technology Group, or TMTG, the parent of Truth Social, became a publicly traded company. It did so with an assist from Jeff Yass, the options king, ByteDance investor, and richest man in Pennsylvania. After helping Trump find religion on ByteDance’s mega-popular app TikTok, Yass’s firm became the largest shareholder of the holding company Trump Media was merging with, helping the venture survive a lean financial period when two Truth Social investors pleaded guilty to securities fraud as part of an insider trading investigation. Yass sold his TMTG shares soon after the company went public; Susquehanna, his investment firm, also sold its TMTG shares, but later bought back in.Trump held onto his TMTG stock, which represented more than half of all issued shares. As of mid-February, his holdings were worth more than $3 billion, making them his most valuable asset—at least on paper. If Trump were to sell any of his shares, the already volatile Trump Media stock price would likely plummet. It’s possible that, like Musk and many other billionaires, Trump uses his holdings as collateral for large loans or other deals. Like much that underwrites Trump’s empire, the value of this collateral is pretty specious, a fiction of financial engineering. In 2024, Trump Media brought in only $3.6 million in revenue—a 12 percent decline from the previous year. Overall, the company reported $400.9 million in losses. Even so, Trump Media handed its employees $107 million in stock compensation while also instituting an executive stock buyback program. TMTG’s market capitalization was a nonsensical $6.59 billion. For someone who has long been a highly leveraged pauper-billionaire, in arrears on his bills, the stock offering must have been a revelation. Without doing much at all, beyond posting on Truth Social, Trump had a multibillion-dollar asset. There was potential for so much more. In mid-October, weeks before Election Day, Trump released his first cryptocurrency token under the auspices of World Liberty Financial, or WLFI, a new venture with which Trump and his sons had partnered. (Its founders include Alex and Zach Witkoff, sons of Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.)While it got off to a slow start, WLFI eventually sold tens of millions of dollars’ worth of tokens—with $30 million worth going to Justin Sun, a Chinese crypto entrepreneur with an exceedingly checkered career history and a taste for less regulated offshore markets. Sun is currently being sued—at least for the moment—by the SEC for fraud. He has every interest in becoming a business partner with the president who will appoint the next SEC chair. “Excited to have you part of the @worldlibertyfi team and our future working together,” wrote Steve Witkoff after Sun announced his investment.By Election Day, it seemed that Trump was not just open for business but establishing new avenues of payment and possible bribery unavailable to past presidents. Gone are the days of political operatives like Robert Maheu handing over suitcases of cash to Nixon administration officials. The payoffs travel on crypto rails now, in the relative open. Or they come as hundreds of millions of dollars in super PAC donations.President Jimmy Carter putting his peanut farm in a blind trust seemed like the sort of accountability gesture that belonged to a far more naïve, less debauched era. After Trump handily won the election, the proverbial “For Sale” sign went up. Justin Sun, whose business interests include the TRON blockchain that is a favored money-laundering tool for global cybercrime, announced another $45 million purchase of WLFI tokens and began publicly advising Trump’s sons on crypto purchases. While Trump put his TMTG shares in a trust, there was little talk about his getting out of the crypto business or swearing off milking his voter base with fraudulent memecoin offerings. President Jimmy Carter putting his peanut farm in a blind trust seemed like the sort of accountability gesture that belonged to a far more naïve, less debauched era.A few days before the inauguration, Trump crossed a Rubicon of grifting that seemed absurd even for him, releasing an official “memecoin”—more accurately called a shitcoin—an essentially worthless cryptocurrency token branded with the ticker symbol $TRUMP. The token had all the hallmarks of a pump-and-dump operation—dropped without warning and hyped by Trump’s social media accounts, with about 80 percent of supply reserved for insiders who would “dump” the tokens on retail traders after they surged toward a multibillion-dollar market cap. And that’s exactly what happened, with large holders quickly selling, while one company behind the coin reaped $100 million in trading fees. Most regular folks who bought and sold $TRUMP lost money.Back in the White House, on January 29, Trump Media announced a new DeFi, or decentralized finance, venture called Truth.Fi. The new company would put $250 million into crypto tokens while offering crypto investment products to customers. It was at least his third distinct crypto company—not counting the $MELANIA shitcoin, which Trump also promoted. As Trump throws himself into one of the world’s shadiest industries, his government is smashing the regulatory and legal apparatus that once might have kept him and his donors in check. While Musk and DOGE take aim at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau—a major enemy of the crypto and banking industries—Trump is installing crypto executives, venture capitalists, and tech entrepreneurs in positions of authority across the government. A number of them come from Andreessen Horowitz, the venture capital firm that poured billions into the crypto bubble, and whose eponymous founders emerged as major Trump backers. The SEC, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, and other financial regulators will soon be heavily staffed by crypto lawyers, fintech executives, and former government employees who passed through the revolving door into the private sector and are now returning, bearing the interests of their erstwhile private-sector employers.Against this backdrop, financial crimes and political corruption seem destined to receive minimal scrutiny under the second Trump administration. His Department of Justice has already tried to scrap criminal charges in the corruption investigation into New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The decision was announced as part of a brazen quid pro quo in which Adams, his legal fate held hostage to Trump’s goodwill, promised to devote more city resources to deporting migrants.Attorney General Pam Bondi has made a point of halting anti-corruption work, while Trump signed an executive order stating that the administration would “pause” enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which bans bribery of foreign officials and has been a useful check on wrongdoing by both U.S. and foreign companies (that can face prosecution in the United States for bribes paid abroad). The administration said that the FCPA “actively harms American economic competitiveness,” since multinational execs couldn’t pay the bribes needed to secure deals in competitive markets. We’re witnessing a monumental and sudden transformation of U.S. legal and regulatory systems. Even white-collar defense attorneys seemed rattled, wondering if this newly permissive legal landscape will cut into their caseloads. “Abolishing globally focused investigative teams and restricting the scope of overseas bribery and foreign lobbying transparency probes will have a significant impact on what’s been a boon for the defense bar this century,” wrote Bloomberg Law.With Musk and DOGE leading the push for austerity and privatization, Trump has established a form of corporate and political governance where financial crimes are tolerated, and even legal, if they redound to his benefit or that of his allies in tech and finance. At the same time, tech companies and their CEOs have offered more direct payments, giving millions to Trump’s inauguration committee. Amazon offered Melania Trump a $40 million documentary deal, which she negotiated with Jeff Bezos over dinner at Mar-a-Lago.That deal was part of an unprecedented postelection flood of cash moving from private industry directly to the president and his family—some $80 million, according to The Wall Street Journal, “as defendants settle lawsuits the president previously filed against them and corporations enter into new business ventures.”And rather than prepare to cover Trump critically, or to fend off the lawfare and intimidation he has long employed, large media companies seem in a rush to pay him off. After the election, Disney settled a lawsuit with Trump involving ABC News for $15 million. Meta shelled out $25 million in another settlement. CBS is reportedly considering negotiating a settlement with Trump over a 60 Minutes preelection interview with Vice President Kamala Harris that Trump falsely claimed was heavily edited in her favor, but executives at CBS’s parent company worry about the legal liability that might come with such a payoff. The Trump administration is duly applying pressure: Brendan Carr, the fiercely pro-MAGA, pro-Musk Federal Communications Commission chair, has been investigating the news program. On February 12, X agreed to pay Trump $10 million to settle a Twitter-era lawsuit relating to his suspension from the platform over his role in the January 6 Capitol riot. While some of these settlement payments went to a future Trump presidential library, that $10 million allegedly went directly to Trump, who now employs Musk as an adviser and special government employee. It seemed less like a typical legal settlement than a gift. Trump is, after all, the boss, and the boss needs to be paid.
