Assessing new allegations that Trump was recruited by the KGB

The former head of Kazakhstan’s intelligence service, Alnur Mussayev, recently claimed in a Facebook post that Donald Trump was recruited by the KGB in 1987, when the 40-year-old real-estate mogul first visited Moscow.
The allegation would, if true, be a bombshell. Mussayev provides no documentary evidence —but then how could he? He alleged that Trump’s file is in Vladimir Putin’s hands.
Mussayev isn’t the only ex-KGB officer to have made such an assertion. Several years ago, Yuri Shvets, a former KGB major now resident in Washington, D.C., served as one of the key sources for Craig Unger’s best-selling book, “American Kompromat: How the KGB Cultivated Donald Trump, and Related Tales of Sex, Greed, Power, and Treachery.”
Just after Mussayev made his claim, another ex-KGB officer living in France, Sergei Zhyrnov, categorically endorsed the allegations in an interview with a Ukrainian journalist. According to Zhyrnov, Trump would have been surrounded 24/7 by KGB operatives, including everyone from his cab driver to the maid servicing his hotel room. Zhyrnov said that Trump’s every move would have been recorded and documented, and that he could have been either caught in a “honey trap” (“All foreign-currency prostitutes were KGB — one hundred percent,” he said) or perhaps recorded bribing Moscow city officials in order to promote his idea of building a hotel in the Soviet capital.
None of these former KGB operatives has provided evidence, but the fact that three KGB agents located in different places and speaking at different times agree on the story suggests this possibility should not be dismissed out of hand. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the first Trump administration and from the initial weeks of the second, it is that everything, including what appears to be impossible, is possible.
Also lending credence to the allegations is the fact that kompromat on Trump would easily, simply and convincingly explain the president’s animus toward NATO, Europe and Ukraine, his admiration of Vladimir Putin and his endorsement of authoritarian rule. One could even invoke “Occam’s razor,” the philosophical principle that claims that simple explanations should be preferred to complex ones.
We could then dispense with contorted explanations that focus on Trump’s mercurial and narcissistic personality on the one hand and American party realignments on the other. Indeed, even if true, these explanations could be accommodated as bells and whistles adorning the central narrative propounded by three KGB agents.
Naturally, Trump and his supporters will bristle. Surely, the three KGB agents are on somebody’s payroll. Who wouldn’t want to discredit the U.S. president? It could be the CIA or FBI, except that these are now firmly in the hands of Trump loyalists. Besides, would they have the ability to buy or coerce residents of Kazakhstan and France? Ditto for other Western intelligence services.
Perhaps it’s Putin? But he surely has no interest in undermining a president who supports his policies toward Ukraine, NATO and Europe.
Somewhat more plausible would be an officer or officers within the Russian intelligence community who oppose Putin and Trump’s designs. This version seems unlikely, but only at first glance, since we know that Putin’s seemingly impregnable regime is actually riven with cracks.
But why would a clandestine opposition make up a story and convince Shvets to spill the beans several years ago? Wouldn’t the dissidents know it’s true?
Perhaps all three ex-KGB agents are simply lying, in the hope of attracting attention and bolstering their fame? A resident of Washington might have this motive, but a Kazakh and Frenchman?
What leads me to think that there might be something to the allegations is the fact that an acquaintance had a very similar experience at just the same time. A left-leaning ladies’ man, he was wined and dined in Moscow for several years in the late 1980s, courted by the ladies — by his round-the-clock interpreter, as well as by a woman who approached him in a department store and invited him home.
We’ll probably never know the truth. But even with no slam-dunk evidence, the allegations should be, to say the least, disturbing, especially for the genuine patriots in the MAGA camp.

Quem sai para curtir a noite paulista em bairros como Bixiga e Pinheiros pode não imaginar a importância das rodas de samba para a periferia. Não somente pelo ponto de vista do entretenimento, mas, sobretudo, o social.
Biblioteca, cursinho popular e aulas de música são algumas das iniciativas de dois grupos da periferia, o Pagode Na Disciplina e o Comunidade Samba da Vila, ambos na Zona Sul.
Luana Vieira, produtora do Pagode Na Disciplina, no Jardim Miriam, demonstra muito orgulho das conquistas proporcionadas pelo cursinho pré-vestibular, um dos projetos do grupo. "Eu já tenho hoje, por exemplo, professor que foi meu aluno na primeira turma [do início do curso]."
Com aulas de cavaquinho, o grupo Comunidade Samba da Vila, no Campo Limpo, pretende formar músicos na própria vizinhança.
"Começamos a dar aulas de cavaquinho para formar músicos na comunidade e assim impactá-la", disse Márcio Bering, militante e um dos componentes do grupo.
Apesar de o reduto do samba ser a Barra Funda, na Zona Oeste, com o surgimento do gênero no extinto Largo da Banana, é na periferia que a magia acontece. Uma construção feita por várias mãos, onde o senso de comunidade é a principal chave.
Por viverem as questões da desigualdade existentes em São Paulo, os grupos Pagode Na Disciplina e Comunidade Samba da Vila têm o samba como ferramenta de transformação, além de manterem vivo o samba raiz e ancestral.
Jardim Miriam, terreno de sambistas
Luana contou ao g1 sobre o surgimento do grupo e a importância do samba como um agente transformador na comunidade em que vive.
Thiago Marcelino, falecido esposo de Luana, foi quem fundou o pagode em 2015. Ele também era músico e vivia do samba, tocando em diferentes pontos da cidade. Era um homem negro criado na periferia e de família tradicional de sambistas, com mais três primos músicos perceberam que não havia esse tipo de atividade por lá.
“Os meninos começam a enxergar essa necessidade assim, ‘pô, a gente faz samba em tudo quanto é lugar, toca em casa de show na Vila Madalena’, voltava para cá, não tinha nada”, relatou.
Luana também relembra que o bairro já foi considerado um dos mais violentos da cidade. E ainda hoje a região é carente de espaços culturais. “[Aqui] não tem uma Casa de Cultura, não tem um Centro Cultural, não tem praça pública.”
Lazer mesmo é o famoso futebol de várzea, tradição dos domingos. Era ao final dos jogos, então, que Thiago e os amigos faziam um batuque, e dali saiu o grupo e o nome "Pagode Na Disciplina". “Aqui tem um campo de futebol ao lado de uma delegacia, que é a 98 DP, todo domingo eles estavam no campo e cada um pegava o seu instrumento e começava a fazer ali um samba, nada sério.”
O campo, além de ficar ao lado do DP, também tem colado nele uma outra comunidade. E cientes do espaço que ocupavam, perceberam que, para estarem ali, tinham que ter disciplina.
O tempo foi passando, e a roda de samba, crescendo.
Após 10 meses, Luana ficaria responsável por organizar e articular a roda. Além de produtora, ela também é articuladora e militante no União Afro Brasil, uma entidade do movimento negro. “Eles [demais integrantes da roda[ ficaram muito perdidos, sem saber o que fazer, porque eram homens negros, homens que não tinham letramento, não tinham conhecimento.”
Sem ter um lugar para onde ir, Luana sabia que o melhor a se fazer era ocupar a rua, mas para isso era preciso conhecer os caminhos legais a percorrer.
“Para poder quebrar esse estereótipo da marginalidade, de que o samba é o samba do boêmio, feito de qualquer maneira", ressalta.
Assim, ela foi atrás dos órgãos responsáveis para regularizar a roda, que acontece na Rua Oldegard Olsen Sapucaia, a via pública mais larga da região e que poderia comportar a roda.
“A gente foi falar com todos os moradores, fez um abaixo-assinado explicando o que seria o projeto, que a gente ia fazer uma comunidade de roda de samba. Que [a roda] ia ser no último domingo do mês, teria um caráter sociocultural. Que, ali era para as famílias e a comunidade poderem ter um dia de lazer. [Um local em] que as mães, as mulheres, pudessem estar. Essa era uma das minhas maiores preocupações.”
📖 'O samba é educacional'
Com oito meses de Pagode Na Disciplina, Luana percebeu que era preciso ir além. Observando o público que frequenta a roda de samba e entendendo a realidade dos jovens das periferias, ela decidiu criar um cursinho preparatório para vestibulares e o Enem.
“Os filhos do nosso público estão aqui, evadindo escola, não estão estudando, não estão acessando as universidades. Os meninos e meninas negras e periféricos estão no lava rápido, estão no farol, e eles estão domingo no samba", observou.
De obras de Djamila Ribeiro a Bell Hooks, o Pagode Na Disciplina conta também com uma biblioteca comunitária, fruto de um sonho da Luana e realizado em parceria com o antigo Twitter. Ela leva conhecimento e abre oportunidades para a comunidade.
Além disso, a produtora também compartilhou com o g1 o desejo de oferecer ainda ao bairro um cursinho para formar profissionais na área jurídica. Assim, imagina, os moradores do Jardim Miriam poderão conhecer melhor os direitos básicos de um cidadão.
Luana relatou que “tem senhorinha, por exemplo, que procura a gente e não sabe se pode se aposentar, que está com o filho preso e não sabe fazer a carteirinha, a gente recebe esse tipo de demanda".
📍 Do outro lado da Sul
Comunidade Samba da Vila tocando em quadra pública na praça João Pais Malio, no Campo Limpo

Era em meio a uma praça bem movimentada na Vila das Belezas, no Campo Limpo, onde os moradores cruzam para voltar para casa ou ir trabalhar, que a roda Comunidade Samba da Vila costumava tocar para um público mais amplo e diverso. Márcio Bering, militante e um dos componentes do grupo, contou ao g1 sobre a história e a função social que carregam a partir dos sambas cantado por eles.
“A Comunidade Samba da Vila surgiu com o intuito de tocar sambas que não se ouviam muito na periferia. Para ouvi-los, há mais de 20 anos, tinha que andar uns 15 km para o Centro e gastar uma graninha, não era todo mundo que tinha acesso, então, a gente achava injusto que o samba que foi criado pelo povo preto e pobre pertença a uma classe que tem mais condições financeiras.”
Márcio nos contou que o principal objetivo deles é levar o samba raiz para onde ele não é tocado.
É através de canções como Dia de Graça, de Candeia –música que traz reflexão sobre consciência social e racial, que eles buscam trazer à roda assuntos pertinentes da vida de quem frequenta e mora na região.
“A gente pensa em como juntar, como fortalecer o samba de São Paulo, mas também em criar um espaço em que possamos falar sobre questões que afligem o nosso povo, de forma transparente, popular.”
"A periferia ensina muita coisa. Tem as tragédias? Sim. Mas o conhecimento sobrevive." Foi o que disse Apolo dos Santos, um jovem de 18 anos e frequentador assíduo das mais diversas rodas espalhadas pela cidade. Ele esteve na primeira roda de samba do ano organizada pela Comunidade Vila do Samba.
Acompanhado pela tia, Apolo disse aprender muito com o samba, não somente pela história, mas também nas questões que permeiam a vida, o dia a dia. "Você aprende sempre alguma coisa, conheço muitas pessoas que agregam à vida."
Falando em aprender, uma das propostas do grupo para a comunidade são as aulas de cavaquinho ministradas na mesma praça em que a roda acontece. "As oficinas de cavaquinho acontecem todo sábado na Praça João País Malio", disse Márcio, a ideia é formar músicos da própria comunidade.
Apolo, que também sabe tocar cavaquinho e foi ensinado pelo pai, acha importante haver iniciativas como essas dentro da comunidade. "Eu acho legal porque a galera tem o conhecimento direto da fonte e não precisa ir até o Centro para obter."
Falta de apoio do poder público
Mesmo que as rodas de samba estejam em alta e ambos os grupos sejam reconhecidos pela prefeitura como "Memória Paulistana", eles ainda sofrem com a falta de apoio do poder público.
"O samba depende da gente, principalmente das comunidades do samba que funcionam sem recurso. Nem todos têm apoio de prefeitura, de secretaria, não recurso público. Não tem apoio", afirmo Luana, do Pagode Na Disciplina.
Márcio também reforça as dificuldades enfrentadas.
"Nós lutamos para que tivesse uma lei de fomento para as comunidades de samba, mas essa administração não consegue executar. E assim nós vamos nos virando, os não contemplados [pela lei] vão se virando."
Em nota, a Prefeitura de São Paulo informou que "está comprometida em promover a diversidade cultural e garantir que todos, independentemente de sua localização, tenham oportunidades de acesso aos recursos de fomento".
E complementou: "no edital de Fomento a Blocos de Rua de 2025, R$ 2,5 milhões foram destinados para 100 blocos, com 232 blocos inscritos ao todo, com o objetivo de reconhecer, incentivar e fomentar a atuação de blocos de carnaval de rua. As inscrições foram abertas entre 16/12/2024 a 06/01/2025, por meio da plataforma Porta de Entrada".
