Tijd van 'Kein geloel, Fussball spielen' is voorbij; waar moet topcoach in 2025 aan voldoen?
Feyenoord schoot met trainer Arne Slot in de roos, maar zijn opvolger Brian Priske bleek diens grote schoenen niet te kunnen vullen. Nu hoopt de Rotterdamse club met de onervaren Robin van Persie een nieuwe topcoach in de dop voor de groep te zetten. Vanavond staat hij voor het eerst langs de lijn in de Kuip bij Feyenoord-NEC (aftrap 21.00 uur).
Waar moet een topcoach anno 2025 eigenlijk aan voldoen? We vroegen het aan trainers die furore maakten in andere sporten: honkbal, hockey en shorttrack.
"Nou, dat is best veel", zegt Robert Eenhoorn. De oud-honkballer was tot afgelopen zomer tien jaar algemeen directeur bij voetbalclub AZ. Daarvoor was hij onder andere coach van honkbalclub Neptunus en het nationale honkbalteam. "Het is niet onmogelijk om aan alles te voldoen. Maar het vak is zeker ook niet voor iedereen weggelegd."
Kein geloel, Fussball spielen, was de gevleugelde uitspraak van de Oostenrijkse trainer Ernst Happel die met Feyenoord in 1970 de Europa Cup I won. Die dagen van de oude stempel - een simpele opstelling en alle ballen op Willem van Hanegem en Coen Moulijn - zijn wel geteld.
"Het wordt steeds meer een people manager dan een trainer-coach die alleen maar de pionnen neerzet", zegt Marc Lammers, die als coach van de hockeyvrouwen goud pakte op de Spelen van Peking in 2008.
Grote staf
Een topcoach heeft niet alleen zo'n 30 à 40 spelers onder zijn hoede. De begeleidingsstaf barst inmiddels zowat uit zijn voegen.
Lammers somt iedereen op. "Assistent-trainers. Inspanningsfysiologen. Diëtisten. Video- en data-analisten. Sportpsychologen. Een keeperstrainer. Een spitsentrainer. Een teammanager. Een koffiejuffrouw. Ook die moet je allemaal goed zien te begeleiden."
De grote begeleidingsstaf heeft ook een voordeel, ziet Eenhoorn. "De trainer hoeft niet meer in alles een expert te zijn. Maar hij moet alsnog wel voldoende van alle materie weten om in te kunnen schatten of al die specialisten goed genoeg zijn."
Daar komt bij dat er in één team veel verschillende karakters zitten, zo leerde Lammers. "En die moet je allemaal anders coachen. Zijn ze introvert of extravert? Het gaat om inlevingsvermogen. Om inspireren. Niet steeds weer boos worden op spelers, maar óók niet te lief zijn."
Het begint allemaal bij een duidelijke voetbalvisie. "Hoe wil je spelen? Dat moet je kunnen overbrengen op je spelers", aldus Eenhoorn. "Je moet tactisch sterk zijn, een wedstrijdplan hebben, maar ook een wedstrijd kunnen lezen en dus over aanpassingsvermogen beschikken."
Trainers hebben veel meer informatie tot hun beschikking dan vroeger, zegt Eenhoorn. "Je ziet dat goeie coaches tegenwoordig ook wel een hogere mate van intelligentie moeten hebben om dat allemaal te kunnen verwerken. Ze moeten nieuwsgierig zijn, op de hoogte zijn van de vernieuwingen in de sport. Dat kan gaan om fysieke trainingen, maar ook om statistieken."
Groter dan de som der delen
Voor Jeroen Otter, succesvol coach in het shorttrack, is een goede samenwerking tussen trainer en spelers het summum. "Samen zijn ze groter dan de som der delen", aldus Otter, die tegenwoordig coaches begeleidt bij de Nederlandse sportkoepel NOC*NSF.
"Je wordt pas succesvol als de afhankelijkheid tussen coach en team écht gevoeld wordt. Iedereen moet denken: zonder jullie kan ik het niet, maar zonder mij wordt het ook niet makkelijk. Dat kan alleen als er vertrouwen in elkaar is. Dat zijn de wortels van een hecht team."
Otter: "Als er vertrouwen is, dan kun je ook echt alles benoemen. Conflicten aangaan, discussies voeren, elkaar op gebreken wijzen. We hebben immers vertrouwen in elkaar en willen dat ene gemeenschappelijke doel bereiken: de landstitel winnen. Of de Champions League."
Maar zie de kikkers - voetballers - maar in de kruiwagen te houden. "Ja, dat is de grootste uitdaging", zegt Otter. "Het zijn vaak eenmansbv'tjes in het voetbal, hè."
"Je moet ze ervan doordringen hoe groot de bv wel niet wordt als je je uiterste best voor elkáár doet."
Welbespraakt
En dan is er nog de druk van de pers, van de fans. Bij een grote club staat een trainer soms wel drie keer per week de media te woord.
Een goede coach is een uithangbord, communicatief sterk en welbespraakt, somt Eenhoorn op. "Ja, dat kun je deels leren, maar mensen echt meenemen in je verhaal, alles goed uitleggen op een manier waarop jij dat zélf graag wil, dat kan niet iedereen, hoor."
Alles bij elkaar blijkt het trainersvak een cocktail voor burn-outs. "Ik denk dat bijna elke trainer van een topclub op het randje zit van overwerkt zijn", zei Slot vorig seizoen.
