I really liked the Hated One's new video on the UK being a surveillance dystopia, but his insistence that "selfhosting isn't a solution, you'll get hacked!" felt really dumb.
I understand the point that your average hobbyist doesn't actually have the time to properly secure everything, but there's a huge difference between running dozens of services and using mostly offline-first software.
The answer definitely is self-hosting in some form, telling people to install Signal and use Tor does nothing other than shift the burden of effort. As far as I'm concerned the ideal solution is to address the problems with self-hosting and how the software ecosystem unnecessarily introduces vulnerabilities.

I'm usually very happy with them, and it's kind that you keep paying 6$ until januari first. But for a hobbyist this is unbearable in costs.

O corpo do segundo jovem desaparecido no Rio Amazonas, em Parintins, foi encontrado nesta segunda-feira (3) por equipes de resgate. A vítima, de 20 anos, e outro amigo, de apenas 16 anos, foram filmados enquanto se afogavam na orla da cidade, na madrugada de sábado (1º).

De acordo com informações apuradas pela Rede Amazônica, o corpo foi encaminhado para o Instituto Médico Legal (IML) e deve ser liberado pela família nas próximas horas.
A busca pelos dois jovens teve início às 4h30 deste sábado, quando o desaparecimento foi registrado. Desde então, o Corpo de Bombeiros Militar do Amazonas (CBMAM) tem concentrado esforços na busca na superfície das águas.
Para reforçar as operações, uma equipe de quatro mergulhadores de Manaus chegou a Parintins no domingo (2), e a Marinha do Brasil também apoiou as buscas.
No início da tarde do domingo, o corpo do adolescente de 16 anos foi encontrado próximo a orla da Praça Digital, local onde o incidente aconteceu.
O caso
De acordo com imagens que circulam nas redes sociais, um grupo de jovens estava filmando uma "brincadeira" e percebeu que dois amigos estavam se afogando.
Nas imagens, os dois tentaram nadar, mas um desapareceu rapidamente. Uma amiga, sem saber nadar, pediu ajuda a um amigo, e uma terceira pessoa se disponibilizou a tentar salvar os jovens, mas o vídeo foi interrompido.
O Corpo de Bombeiros segue em busca do segundo jovem desaparecido, enquanto o caso segue sendo investigado.
