The last two international orders I placed, which were supposed to be delivered via the post office, simply never arrived. And I didn't get a refund. Years ago, I used to order proof copies of my books fairly regularly -- from a print on demand company in the states -- and use the cheap/free shipping option, which went through the SA post office. When they did arrive, they took an average of 6 months each (the site itself said it would take about 6 weeks), and I had no indication of progress and just had to deal with not knowing until one day I randomly got a slip in my postbox... or not.
The last such order I placed was probably about 3 years ago.
These days, I try not to order anything internationally, and if I do, I'll pay the extra and use a courier company.
My wife does buy from Temu and Shein quite often though, and has always been happy with her deliveries (but of course, both of those companies DO use a private courier company).
The SA post office is simply a lost cause, and IMO there's no point in continuing to pump money into them.

But you just got to face facts: those days are gone, and we're never ever getting them back. :(

Belangenbehartiger bij belastingen en toeslagen moet meer menselijke maat brengen
De overheid gaat burgers en kleine ondernemers die het gevoel hebben dat zij tegen muren oplopen bij de Belastingdienst of de Dienst Toeslagen beter helpen. Dat tenminste is de belofte van de 'Belangenbehartiger belastingplichtigen en toeslagengerechtigden' die vanaf deze maand actief is op het ministerie van Financiën.
Het was de wens van het laatste kabinet-Rutte en stond in het coalitieakkoord dat eind 2021 het licht zag: de 'menselijke maat' zou een veel zwaarder stempel moeten gaan drukken op de werkwijze van de Belastingdienst en de Dienst Toeslagen. Ruim drie jaar later, vanaf deze maand, begint Hayde Zarkeshan als Belangenbehartiger.
In haar team, dat nu wordt gevormd, is dit jaar plek voor voor 31 voltijdbanen, volgend jaar groeit dat door naar 49. Belangrijkste taak: het oppikken van signalen van waar het misgaat in de wijze waarop belastingbetalers of ontvangers van toeslagen worden behandeld.
Die zaken worden, is de belofte, waar mogelijk op een menswaardige manier opgelost. En de lessen die daaruit voortvloeien gaat de belangenbehartiger doorgeven binnen de Belastingdienst en de Dienst Toeslagen, maar ook aan andere uitvoeringsorganisaties als het UWV en de SVB. Ook ministeries en de tweede kamer kunnen rapportages van de belangenbehartiger verwachten.
Ingewikkeld en lastig
"Er zijn in Nederland heel veel partijen waar je kunt aankloppen als burger of ondernemer. Bijvoorbeeld Schuldhulpmaatje, sociaal raadslieden en het Juridisch Loket. Dat gaat in veel gevallen goed," zegt Zarkeshan. "Maar soms is het zo ingewikkeld en lastig dat deze hulpverleners er niet makkelijk uitkomen. En als zij voelen dat de burger echt in een hoek komt te staan, dat er deadlines lopen, dat er vorderingen zijn ingesteld zijn die echt dramatische gevolgen hebben, dan mogen zij dat bij ons aangeven."
Zarkeshan belooft dat zij en haar medewerkers die zaken op een andere manier gaan bekijken. "Altijd vanuit de gedachte: waar een wil is is een weg. Wij geloven dat iedere casus op een menswaardige manier opgelost kan worden. Dan gaan we vervolgens als een betrouwbare vriend van de ambtenaren samen met de ambtenaren kijken naar andere oplossingen."
Die ambtenaren zijn volgens de nieuwe belangenbehartiger vrijwel altijd bereid om mee te denken over meer menswaardige oplossingen voor burgers of ondernemers die in de knel raken. "Maar ze weten soms niet dat er toch ruimte is voor een andere interpretatie. Vaak is dat uit onwetendheid of het mijden van risico's. Wij kunnen dan de verbindende factor zijn, ervoor zorgen dat we van elkaar leren."
Kwartiermaker
Het ministerie van Financiën is een ingewikkelde organisatie waar duizenden ambtenaren werken. Hoe de belangenbehartiger en haar medewerkers daarin goed kunnen functioneren, daar was 'kwartiermaker' Soler Berk de afgelopen anderhalf jaar druk mee. Zijn eindverslag is een document vol kernwaarden, doorstroomschema's, stakeholders, casuïstiek en leerprincipes.
Is dat allemaal niet wat veel voor een onderbezette organisatie die al problemen met onder meer Box 3 en de hersteloperatie voor gedupeerden van het toeslagenschandaal op zijn bord heeft liggen?
Berk wijst op de 'doorzettingsmacht'; de belangenbehartiger kan tot op het hoogste ambtelijk niveau om uitleg vragen over waarom een zaak niet meer menswaardig wordt aangepakt. "De belangenbehartiger kan ambtenaren zo ook werk uit handen nemen. Op het moment dat we met elkaar leren dat soms dingen anders kunnen, dan kost het de volgende keer minder tijd."
Het gaat uiteindelijk, zegt Zarkeshan, om gedragsverandering. "We moeten met zijn allen uiteindelijk anders gaan werken. En dat 'anders' is oplossingsgericht. Wat ondernemender, wat creatiever met oplossingen, vanuit de behoefte van onze doelgroep."
Versnipperd
Die doelgroep bestaat deels uit burgers die zijn aangewezen op allerlei verschillende regelingen om rond te kunnen komen. Berk weet als voormalig lid van de commissie sociaal minimum hoe versnipperd inkomensbeleid in Nederland is. "Het kan zo zijn dat als je in een bepaalde gemeente woont, er veertig verschillende landelijke en lokale inkomensregelingen zijn, acht verschillende definities van inkomen en twintig loketten waar je moet zijn."
Het systeem van regelingen is de laatste jaren enorm uitgebreid en daarmee steeds ingewikkelder geworden. De overheid roept het zo over zichzelf af dat burgers er makkelijk in vast kunnen lopen, beamen Berk en Zarkeshan. "Het is enerzijds pleisters plakken, maar anderzijds ook, schouder aan schouder met andere organisaties, aandacht blijven vragen voor de noodzaak het systeem te veranderen," zegt Berk.
De belangenbehartiger belastingen en toeslagen kan daaraan een bijdrage leveren. Zarkeshan: "We gaan aan de Tweede Kamer rapporteren. En toelichting geven."
