关于周本人的文革历程，海外已有相当有份量的著作，比如高文谦的《晚年周恩来》就是一部质量很高的著作，材料扎实、立论平实、分析入理。我稍觉遗憾的是，高先生是厚道人，下笔相当敦厚，对周笔下留情，没有更犀利痛快地剖析周助纣为虐的阴暗心理。我以为在打倒刘少奇的问题上，周用他超常的处理事务 能力，帮助毛干成了他想干而干不成的事。我们都知道，毛是在66年8月5日写了《炮打司令部——我的一张大字报》，而就在前一天，8月4日，毛紧急召开了政治局常委会，就在这个会上，毛大骂“牛鬼蛇神，在座就有”，并当面羞辱刘少奇，以致刘少奇控制不住情绪与毛当场顶撞，号称五不怕，不怕撤职、不怕降级、不怕开除党籍、不怕离婚、不怕坐牢杀头。而毛之所以当面向刘发难，就因为7月31日，周恩来与蒯大富两次见面，详谈达六小时之久，让蒯把刘少奇、王光美派工作组入清华，压制造反学生的事儿原原本本讲了个透。周详细做了记录，并且向毛做了汇报，给毛提供了打倒刘少奇的口实。胡鹏池先生分析周在这个关节点上的作用是，1）他细致、周密的工作作风，使得蒯大富这个典型能够站得住。2）周恩来的人望使他的调查结果更有说服力。而且只有周恩来最合适，他的调查结论没人能怀疑，不仅压得住群众，压得住老帅元老们，也压得住刘少奇与邓小平。

“敲砂罐”
从1950年下半年开始，抚琴台周围美丽的田园风光和静谧的气氛，便被一阵阵刺耳的警笛和枪声撕得粉碎。因为这里成了当时镇反运动中处决“反革命”犯的屠场。只要看见有荷枪实弹的士兵，在抚琴台四周一布防，就知道杀人的悲剧马上要上演了。不一会拉着死囚的极刑专车，便呼啸而来，一般是前面吉普 车开道，死囚车居中，都是敞篷大卡车，死囚被五花大绑还插上“标子”，武装押送车架着机枪殿后。但抚琴台还不直通公路，公路离抚琴台还有好几百米。于是死囚便从车上拉下来，由两个士兵一左一右架着，往刑场拉去。由于这段路是田坎小路，三个人无法并排走，于是只好将死囚从田土中拉过去。还有女死囚同样如此对待，真是够野蛮了。当时枪毙人都是刻意指着死囚的脑袋打，有的死后只剩下半边脑袋了，有的甚至只有颈部尚存，人像个木桩一样立在那里，一会儿方才倒下，真个是惨不忍睹。那时还给这种杀人的方式取了个名字叫：“敲砂罐”，也就是说把剥夺人的生命看得像敲破一个罐子一样那么随便，那么无足轻重。哪还谈得上半点人权与人的尊严？在那些人的眼里，根本没把“反革命”当人看，更不要说还有大量被冤枉的人了。
就在这段时间里，抚琴台隔不到几天就要弄来一批人枪毙，最多时一天来过两次。其实这里还并不是当时成都主要杀人的地方，更多的人则被杀于北门外昭觉寺附近。由此可见，当时的镇反运动是何等的“大张旗鼓雷厉风行”了。但就这样也已使附近居民，产生了极大的恐惧心理。有人说晚上听见那大土丘上有哭声，有人说看见坡上有“鬼火”时隐时现，按科学讲，这应是人骨中的磷在空气中自燃的现象。可是有一天有个姓黄的独居的孤老太婆，讲出了一个骇人听闻的故事，她说那天晚上天刚黑，有个男人在她门前说：“老太太我要个火”，她便问：“你要火干啥？”。男人答道“我去找找我的脑袋在哪里”。此言一出，真把好多人吓坏了。虽然派出所把黄老太婆弄去训了一顿，关了几天，但看她年纪太大，无儿无女，又是“劳动人民”，只好放了。但人们的恐惧并未因此减轻，一到天黑好多人都不敢出门。

李志绥从“回归”到“不归”的传奇正是他半个世纪心路历程的投影。他属于在国难深重的三十年代成长的青年一代，饱经家国之痛，一心要为民族复兴贡献自己的一生。我和他是同代人，五十年代初期，受到同样憧憬的鼓舞，他放弃在澳洲的外科医生工作，我丢下半途而废的芝大博士论文，应召兼程回国。随后的二、 三十年中，我因说了几句真话便贬为“贱民”，流徙边陲，幸免于一死；而他贵为大红大紫的“御医”，雨露承恩，在外人眼中也算得上“春风得意”啦。
殊不知，李志绥的专业是西医外科，当年立志要当一名神经外科专家。无奈一入龙门，身不由己，沦为暴君的保健郎中兼夜话清客，虚耗了一生的黄金岁月。到头来，也无非是暴君生杀予夺的另一类“贱民”而已。不出几年，他已经对毛王朝感到幻灭。从此，肮脏险诈的宫廷政治，暴君的荒淫无耻，在在冲击着他的良知。可是，“伴君如伴虎”，他只得战战兢兢，守口如瓶，直到暴君终于放手的那一刹那，他才初步得到解脱。
当时，志绥刚五十六岁，何去何从，颇有“回旋余地”。凭他“御医”的金字招牌，捞个一官半职，或“下海”捞钱，都足可“颐养天年”。找他写回忆录的也大有人在，但他还能昧着良心说假话吗？生活在一个谎言王国里，说真话又是罪不容诛的。他唯有“韬光养晦”，等到时机成熟，毅然奋笔直书，花了九个月的时间就完成了一部前无古人的巨著。“天高皇帝远”，他可以讲真话了，把真人真事和盘托出，既不为尊者讳，也不夸大渲染，驱散了流言的迷雾，给世人留下一部翔实可信的史书。而且，书中有书，和令人发指的毛史交织在一起的，是一个善良的知识分子“廿二年”催人泪下的遭遇和心路历程。官方斥之为“造谣污蔑”，无非因为它揭开了他们数十年来苦心经营的画皮，倒是从反面证实了它的价值。
