Mumbai is one of the most populous cities on the planet, with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis,’ Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 square km Slum. Although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai, so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the municipality's support, real estate tycoon Babulal Varma razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

“Wild, Wonderful West Virginia” is what people call their state in the middle of the Appalachian mountains. But under the idyll hides a black hell: a labyrinth of low tunnels in which miners have to crawl on their hands and knees all day long in the dark.
The film team accompanies a traditional miner's family in their everyday life. With the two sons Scott and Steven Lockhart they go for miles into the mountains. At the end of the shaft the battle for the coal begins for them and a dozen buddies, constantly crawling in the dark. The open conversations with the miners make us understand why lifelong democrats suddenly entrust their hopes for the future to a Donald Trump.
This is an expedition to the original and sinister sides of the remote mountain state. An expedition to a fair of a snake-handler-Pfingst community, a meeting with musician Alan Cathead Johnston and his bluegrass and mountain music ballads, or Sheriff Martin West, who in a lawsuit blames the three most powerful American pharmaceutical companies for the rampant opioid epidemic. Maria Gunnoe is also a fighter. The Cherokee Indian has been threatened for 17 years for daring to denounce the coal barons for destroying the beautiful mountains of West Virginia

It’s the new housing trend. Entire private neighborhoods – sometimes spanning several hundreds of hectares and complete with luxury facilities, private schools, and shops – all under extreme security and banned to non-residents.
In gated communities like MacDonald Highlands, residents can dine at private restaurants, play a game of tennis or enjoy a round of golf. They have their own personal trainers on-call, 24/7.
Needless to say, this doesn't come cheap. Just the obligatory gym and club memberships come to over $700 a month. And, in addition to the high maintenance charges, residents are expected to adopt a certain lifestyle and comply with strict regulations. At MacDonald Highlands, among the many rules, it is forbidden for children under 14 to walk around alone. Also banned is the use of skateboards and scooters and making noise after 10pm. Offenses, like not taking down Christmas lights within the required period or having a less-than-immaculate garden, are all punished with a fine.
It used to be that these gated communities were home only to super-rich Americans but now they’re appearing across the globe and are shaping new residences of the future. Over in Marseille, security-conscious real estate owners have petitioned the City Council to erect barriers and close off entire neighborhoods. The first gated community has opened in Sofia, Bulgaria.
But as more and more people take refuge behind walls, will the remaining public space be turned into a giant ghetto?

But American workers have come out of the crisis more vulnerable and even poorer than ever. 46.7 million Americans live in poverty with around 15% of the US population living below the poverty line. But they aren’t unemployed – most of them have at least two jobs. They’re ‘the working poor’. Meet the people behind America’s economic recovery.
Germania has two minimum wage jobs, working 18 hours a day. Three quarters of a her salary go on paying for the 15m square motel room she shares with her two children and her mother-in-law. But even with two jobs, she struggles to buy food for her family. In the past four months, they have stayed in five motels, moving every few weeks to ever cheaper rooms as their money runs out.
Joe and Chelsie live with their two young daughters in a tent in a church carpark. Their bathroom is a porta-potty they share with 50 other people. Around 500 families in Seattle live in these temporary camps. Like Germania, Chelsie works full time but she can no longer afford to live in the city she works in.
Trade Union leader, Scott Slawson, has worked for General Electric for 13 years. But a few days ago, he was told his job will be re-located to a state with no wages and 50% lower salaries. He doesn’t know if he will be able to find another job.
