So you might as well have used that from the get go and avoid all the complexity.
With just relays:
- you move the problem to the relay
- are still very dependent on your relay service provider
- have worse (non-Nostr) identifiers

Lightning channels would ABSOLUTELY be bigger if the fiat price was lower.
Consider that locking funds into a Lightning channel, especially if your goal is to be routing node, is both an opportunity cost and a security risk.
An opportunity cost, because there are other things you could be doing with those funds.
A security risk because your keys are stored "hot."
The more purchasing power you have with those same sats, the more things you could possibly be using them for other than locking them into a Lightning channel AND the more worried you will be about having the keys controlling those funds on an internet connected device.

What about with the federation stuff and alternative URLs? A relay could keep its canonical url, but still be available on alternate domains (or even transports). The relay could also advertise active replication of content with another, entirely separate relay.

Thanks for writing this out.
Open questions remain:
1. How does a community switch relays then? While keeping their identifier (that everyone stored) as usable, of course.
2. How can I edit an h-tag after publication of a non-replaceable event? I need targeted publication to not have fixed targets forever.
3. Cross posting content is not a solution for me. You don't send a mail to one person and then forward it to the other people you wanna send that mail to. I want to enable to users target content in a straightforward way. I'm not gong to ask a dev of a photography app to publish their release in one community and then cross-publish (what is that even then?) it the other communities he wants to target.

i think it’s good that you’re sceptical, but in my opinion bitcoin is to be used as a currency not just a store of value. for a lot of these people this is how they are able to participate in the economy as many of them don’t have bank accounts. what nostr:npub1aftmyhm62lrp6lwsha3yzyjy5kqdvuy7g23qg28a8q0cnmudv0ds0sdcke is doing on the island by teaching them bitcoin not only as a currency but also as a way for them to save for their own and family’s future

Not really, since events are atomic and can be downloaded and stored on any computerized device running a relay-websocket or relay-API (RESTful).
It's widely-distributed storage, but the storage doesn't need to be very redundant. There are already thousands of relays, all over the globe. You can spread the publications out. You don't need to have each publication on every relay, you just need each one on several relays, as clients can crawl Nostr and find them, wherever you put them. Even if that's just your laptop running a webserver.
Nostr actually solves the Big Data storage problem.
