实际上，中国古代有两千年时间，社会严重缺乏金属货币。市场交易规模很小，而且很多时候，都以绢、帛甚至麻布这类比较轻便的物品充作交易媒介。直到唐朝时期，白大爷不是杜甫的《卖炭翁》中，还有“半匹红绡一丈绫，系向牛头充炭值”的诗句。
高昂的交易成本和交易风险，极大地抑制了专业化社会分工的形成。
金属货币基本覆盖日常交易，是宋朝以后的事了。但这并不完全是朝廷铸币的结果。实际上，整个中国古代币制极其混乱，各种成色、大小的铜钱、铁钱五花八门，官铸、私铸并行不悖。如同明清商民能精准识别银子的成色，古人在识别钱币成色、重量方面，也一直拥有超凡的能力：哪种钱好，哪种钱劣，望摸掂摔一番，就能得出换算的比率。这种情况下，由于官营铸币作坊的腐败低效，官方铸钱往往无利可图，经常会睁一只眼闭一眼默许民间私铸。
反正你也赚不了太多。
而唐宋之后，金属钱币普及，还有一个令人啼笑皆非的原因：繁荣的海上贸易带来了大量的金属。唐宋时期主要是铜，明清是银。正是这两种东西，撑起了整个帝国的交易秩序，甚至直接影响了明清两大王朝的兴衰。
从清朝中后期开始，中国最优质的货币，是西班牙、墨西哥的银元。尤其后者，在中国被称为“鹰洋”，硬通货中的硬通货。硬到什么程度？鸦片战争的赔款，英国要求就是以这种鹰洋为单位；甚至直到上世纪二三十年代的中央苏区，官方铸币厂出品的也是鹰洋样式的银元。
