i used to see ads for them in Nexus magazine when i was a teenager, i thought it was interesting, i may have to get some
you can see the basic effect simply by putting a small object close to your eyes and focusing towards the edge of it
i forget what name they gave to this in physics... the original invention of the camera, which had the full name "camera obscura" was basically a little shed with a tiny hole in one side and a silver screen on the opposite side, this was then combined with iodine, which is light sensitive, especially to ultraviolet, which then would leave an image
and yes, they focus at "infinite" distance perfectly, which is to say that the whole image is in focus, lenses usually have distortions at the edges, which i think also interferes with convergence because it makes the outer edges and inner edges appear further away than they actually are
