Every once in a while, a judge makes a decision that blows your mind by such epic proportions that you don’t even know how to caption it.
Today, Judge Failla, overseeing the prosecution of Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm, effectively reinforced her September decision that it does not matter whether Tornado Cash took custody of customer funds – the developers could still be charged with licensing violations, **even though the Government is no longer arguing that Tornado Cash needed a license.**
"The word license doesn’t apply here," […] “Theres no available license to move criminal proceeds, and the jury wont be instructed that there's any licensing issues at stake."
Because of this, what senior FinCEN officials have had to say on this “isn’t exculpatory” (read: doesn’t matter): “You haven’t persuaded me that the custody issue is as important as you say.”
Honestly at a loss for words for how someone could be sent to trial to face decades in prison when not even senior employees of the regulatory agency in charge seem to know how to interpret their own guidance.

I wouldn’t fully trust my take here, due to “If AI can really replace folks, I’m not getting paid” bias and all. But IMO, outsourcing vs in-housing is a bit like building vs buying, tendencies always swings too far in one direction and are followed by a correction.
However... IMO, even though AI hype is... well... Hype. It does change things a bit (e.g. it makes it easier to tap into even cheaper Asian and South American labour, as AI handles translation quite well). Plus the geopolitical scenario is changing fast as well.
The good news is... As someone working on the platform side of things, I’m seeing managers absolutely desperate to hire, begging for budget while everything is on fire. So, if we use Platform teams as a kind of thermometer for tech in general, I’d say that some of the low cost-of-living / outsourced / contractor teams will face trouble soon, and companies will be forced to rehire locally as part of the usual pendulum swing between outsourcing and in-housing.
That said, we’ve got used to seeing the same five or six companies dominate over the past two or three decades. Some of these giants will fall. And I honestly think a lot of the next “FAANG” will likely be Chinese, Indian, etc. So my honest take is: I really don’t know what will happen to the job market in the developed West for a while.
I’m “lucky” enough to have access to both developed and developing world jib markets. Things in the UK are almost as shaky as they are in the US. Meanwhile, some of my former colleagues in Brazil are living the dream. $100k USD year in Brazil get you the equivalent of $300k in a low cost of living area in the US. A lot if folks are struggling even in the current "favourable" developing wotld market though. So it's hard to tell what's really happening.
If you ask me, I’m personally not moving back to Brazil for now. I still have a bit of hope that parts of the industry (not just Big Tech, but also telco, finance, etc, will adapt and bounce back). I won’t lie though: I’ve turned down a few opportunities in Asia and the Middle East in the past. I’m not so sure I’d reject a compelling offer nowadays.

I'm in the same boat. The more I think about it, the more it seems they aren’t actually planning or thinking anything through. The idea that there's some obscure but intellectually sound evil plan is oddly comforting, but to me, it just looks like pure chaos and incompetence (depressing as that is).
Execs and investors are simply reacting, trying to maintain their current revenue streams and chasing short-term incentives, semi-blindly. Unfortunately, we're living in a mix of Idiocracy and Don't Look Up. Like, hey, we're heading towards a totally avoidable apocalyptical outcome, but... you know... Brawndo has what plants crave! It's got electrolytes! (Proceeds to try and make a few more million and escape to space.)

Yes! We're also thinking about giving every community their own mint. Cashu zaps are verifiable by checking the p2pk lock against receiver pubkeys + dleq proofs against mint pubkeys.
You could do this with a "pure" Lightning wallet even that generates nuts only at time of zapping.

the tl;dr of why monerobros are wrong:
1. a blockchain ledger cannot scale sufficiently to enable sufficient users (anonymity set)
2. it can't be a store of value with a weak encryption scheme because there is always some question about whether the supply has increased without it being observable by exploiting an as yet unknown bug in the implementations
(and we know there already has been inflation bugs in it a few times in the past)
(and the security of the encryption is at least half as many bits of security as we depend on for TLS)

Honestly, even if we can't get everyone onto something like 0xChat, regular folks can at least replace Telegram and WhatsApp with something like Signal. People who truly care about you will find a way to download an app and go through a two-minute setup process. Everyone else doesn't really matter. The way to defeat Metcalfe’s Law is by pioneering your way out of existing networks. They either adapt to survive or die in the process.

We’re working on an open communities spec at damus. one downside of lightning zaps is that they are not verifiable from random people, they are only verifiable if you trust the wallet that sent the zap.
I haven’t looked at the cashu zaps spec, but i wonder if you could you build a stacker-news like client where the community has their own cashu node? Then you could validate zaps against the community mint, enabling secure, Reddit-style top posts powered by ecash zaps.
Is this doable nostr:npub12rv5lskctqxxs2c8rf2zlzc7xx3qpvzs3w4etgemauy9thegr43sf485vg ? I guess the last ingredient is making sure the ecash wallet swaps the token for the community you are sending nuts to.
Maybe ya’ll are building something similar at chorus?

- Cooked utilitarian metrics (consumption, access to services, literacy rates)
- Unreflective appeals to individual freedom, self-expression and authenticity
A teleological argument (what are humans for and how does the internet advance that purpose) or an ontological argument (what is good about humans and how does the internet amplify that) would be ideal.

GM folks! Life for techies in 2025 is... interesting. So you just overthought things again and flunked another technical interview? Chin up mate! You bombed that coding kata you’d usually ace with your hands tied behind your back and was told by an interviewer (who probably doesn’t realise they’re indirectly using a lot of your code) that you’re not senior enough. Great for the ego.
Then you drag yourself into yet another meeting about the urgent need to adopt more AI, with the unspoken vibe that layoffs are looming due to “productivity gains”. And finally, you get to do some actual work, basically firefighting and debugging AI slop that somehow made it to production despite all the processes, tests, linters, code reviews, and definitions of done.
Work’s never felt slower. It is what it is.
If you can, escape the salt mines and build something you care about in your own time. It’s one of the best ways to beat the existential dread of 2025.
