Happy Sunday #Nostr !
Here’s your #NostrTechWeekly newsletter at the nostr:npub19mduaf5569jx9xz555jcx3v06mvktvtpu0zgk47n4lcpjsz43zzqhj6vzk written by nostr:npub1r3fwhjpx2njy87f9qxmapjn9neutwh7aeww95e03drkfg45cey4qgl7ex2
Our goal here is a weekly newsletter focused on the more technical happenings in the nostr-verse. Follow the hashtag #NostrTechWeekly to ensure you’re getting the newsletter ASAP!
TONS of new tech was shipped this week; very exciting. Let’s dive in!
## Recent Upgrades to Nostr (NIPs)
#### 1) [NIP 315: User Statuses](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/737) 👋
This is a feature where users can add an (optionally) expiring status to be displayed when folks interact with that user’s account. It’s very reminiscent of the old AIM days. Damus’ implementation can even read the music you’re listening on your device and broadcast that with your status. It has brought a lot of joy and memes this week!
nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s proposed this NIP to codify the work he did in Damus to support this feature. It’s been live for a few days in Damus (TestFlight version only I believe) as well as on Amethyst, and I hope more clients adopt it.
#### 2) [Updates to NIP 51: Lists](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/723) 📜
NIP 51 is a way to publish arbitrary lists. They can be lists of npubs, hashtags, really anything. There are some implementations that use NIP 51 to create a users’ preferred mute list to curate their own feed.
nostr:npub1gzuushllat7pet0ccv9yuhygvc8ldeyhrgxuwg744dn5khnpk3gs3ea5ds expanded its use to explicitly support a list of bookmarks. This seems like it could be used in many contexts, especially a nostr-browser 😉.
#### 3) Proposed [NIP 44: encryption standard](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/715) & [NIP 58: Gift Wrapping](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/716) 🎁
As mentioned last week. There’s still a lot of activity around truly private/secure DMs and these two NIPs seem to be gaining steam as the right way to handle it. As a reminder they’re a strategy for encrypting Nostr events so that the metadata (from, to, created at, etc) isn’t publicly accessible like they are with standard NIP 4 DMs used in most clients.
Seems like they’re getting close to approval and adoption as NIPs!

#### 4) Proposed [NIP 69: Polls]( https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/320 ) ❓
This proposal has been around a while since there are obvious analogs to what is available in legacy social media.
The one great unique Nostr flavoring is that it’s an extension of the zap protocol so that polls can only be answered by those willing to pay to answer. This can decrease spam and also enable polling that’s weighted by how much people care about their answer (measured by the amount they’ll put up to answer the poll). Pretty interesting take on polls.

## Notable projects
#### [Nostr browser - Android only](nostr:note1ak7l9jzrn8glls9j4dn29w65uhdmcxd322mpq3qpfwndqqk237js3y2tdp )
nostr:npub1xdtducdnjerex88gkg2qk2atsdlqsyxqaag4h05jmcpyspqt30wscmntxy announced an early version of a Nostr-browser. Since Nostr is a protocol with many kinds of apps that can be run on top of it, there’s a need for users to be able to interact with any kind of Nostr app even if the current commonly used clients don’t know how to handle that kind of event. These browsers will become like hubs for Nostr’s ecosystem of micro-apps.
A nostr-browser will do the work of sensing the kind of Nostr event and attempt to find an application to handle the event. Think about how most clients can’t handle the Nostr events that are shared, remixable audio. But stemstr.app can handle that kind of event! With some work a Nostr-browser could find an application to handle each kind of event to give the user a seamless experience.
This is just the beginning but it’s an incredible future they’re building towards.
#### [Swarmstr](http://swarmstr.com)
This is an app where people can crowdsource answers to questions via Nostr. This seems similar to Quora but less gated.
On top of the advantages of being built on Nostr, swarmstr hints at a future where we can post bounties for questions and get paid for our knowledge and helpfulness. This could also be a natural place for Data Vending Machines to plug in and bid to be paid to be useful.

#### [Private Group Chat](https://www.nostrpulsar.chat)
Pretty straightforward and needed. This is using the pattern from the Gift Wrapping (yet to be merged) NIP to mask metadata to make a more private and secure chat.

#### [Websites hosted on Nostr](https://h.hostr.cc/p/a5a44e2a531efcc86491c4b9a3fa67daee8f60c9d2757a12eed95d98c5d6fc42/d/hostr-lp)
This is a way to host websites using Nostr by publishing the website’s code as a Nostr event. Similarly to nostrsites.com by nostr:npub1v6xwae25wh6etmqw3m6yce9lnk5dnhtqpzk9fhxjfvjsryctjc8q2kxk5t
It’s probably best for simple websites and not huge web applications, but having a decentralized way to store and distribute your website is indeed powerful 💪

## Latest conversations
#### [Content Moderation on Nostr](nostr:note1y5h6kgjyp2nsmnl4fw5a3tudjtsa5dzmk3f504w6ajgqyf5jsntsgzp4sn)
I personally kicked up a bit of a shit storm this week by broaching the topic of opt-in content moderation in Nostr. Content moderation may be necessary in the future for a few reasons:
1) If Nostr scales to millions of users, there will be a significant increase in the number of bots and scammers. Nostr users will likely want some way to filter that out of their feed without spending hours a day muting individual accounts.
2) If Nostr becomes home to illegal content, regardless of who says it’s illegal or if we agree that the content should be illegal, governments will likely go after relay operators, which is a threat to the operation and decentralization of Nostr.
3) Nostr users may want to opt-in to content moderation to try to prevent content like child porn or other sexually exploitative content from being propagated through their area of Nostr.
The proposal is about an ecosystem of blocklists maintained by various third parties that compete with each other to create the set of blocklists that users, clients and relays find most agrees with their sensibilities. Users, clients and relays could choose (or choose not to) utilize these lists to filter the events that pass through their feed.
It prompted good conversation but it’s a touchy subject since we Nostriches are a freedom loving bunch.

**Introduction**
![Gold_symbol.webp](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/d4dcbc72aa7c7d395290d28c288ea3316ee44baf28a48a659402fc4428b68072.jpg)
*Image1: Gold in element table*
Gold is an inert metal that is soft and malleable. It is also a fair conductor of heat and electricity. Added to the fact that it is relatively scarce in compare to other metal such as copper and silver, there is a continous demand for gold as an ornamental, jewellery or for use as electronic parts.
A growing number of people are hoarding gold as a form of investment as they expect that the value will eventually goes up on a long term basis. Historically, gold also has been used as a medium of exchange by different nations and empire. The question is, which gold is the right one for investment?
** Physical gold vs Paper gold**
![download (5).jpeg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/3745bc75dc2d8987805d6f59b1642b4db0a15807505204cf0cef48f5cce96b29.jpg)
*Image2: Gold bar by KABGold*
Physical gold refers to any form of gold held physically by a person or entity. Holding physical gold is the purest form of gold investment or hoarding but it comes with several hurdle. Gold minting involves tremendous number of overheads such as mining cost, casting cost, packaging, delivery fees and taxes. Such cost could reduce the physical gold after sale value, especially if the physical gold is quite small in size.
![download (6).jpeg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/f190acba30af736ddcc8d0fb16100128701b429b339fa68271f72bd62e6a49ed.jpg)
*Image3: Uncang Emas is a custodian gold example*
Paper gold on the other hand refers to any form of custodian gold held by either banks, firms or private companies on behalf of a customer. One of the benefit of paper gold is refractory purchase; the custodian entity buys a large-sized gold bar with minimal overheads and clients own a fractional rights over the gold bar. An example of such custodian gold in Malaysia is [KABGold](https://nos.re/kabgold).
However, such scheme is not without risks and other costs. The custodian entity may or may not charge a safekeeping fee or swap fee if the client opt to swap their rights for a physical piece. Custodian entities also may reserve the rights to determine on a buyback purchase, often at the disadvantage of the clients. In addition, a custodian may run a way with clients fund or ended up in bankruptcy, putting clients gold as hostage. As custodian gold generally does not fall under the formal purview of a bank, and thus is not protected by depository protection in any country.
Paper gold may also refers to price tag trading items such as gold shares in the form of leverage or ETFs. Such form of gold investments are at a higher risk even as no physical gold is ever held by the trading entities.
**Forms of physical gold**
Supposed you are interested in purchasing your first investment gold. There are few consideration that you should look into such as:
- gold purity
- gold form
- manufacturers' reputation
- bullion status
**Gold's purity**
![KAB-05GM-KLASIK-v2-web-default.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/65589d5e5dfa7af5e9c1504bbb7caede2a23e4713dafe9d07d8c32ca71b06bac.jpg)
*Image4: Gold purity are usually shown on the gold certificate*
Gold purity are usually measured as parts per thousandth. A gold with a purity tag of 999 means 99.9% of the gold item is made of pure gold while 0.01% are impurities. A gold with a purity tag of 916 means 91.6% of the gold item is made of pure gold while 8.4% are impurities. In other words, a higher the purity tag is better.
I personally discouraged anyone from investing in any gold with purity tag below 916. This is because, at this level, the cost of extracting the pure gold metal from the item increases, thus reducing the gold value altogether. Why do minters make gold with impurities? The primary reason is because, pure gold is soft, and thus it may not be suitable to be used to make heavy jewelleries. Simply said, the impurities will make the gold harder.
**Gold form**
![10-dinar-website-default.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/f0fc01d6eb74166530cd1434dcb6c700afe6b627667ed362f080702ef34449a8.jpg)
*Image5: Dinar is an example of a gold coin*
Generally, investment gold are in form of bars. Some are also present in the form of coins, but they usually have higher minting costs. Jewelleries such as rings or necklase usually incur very high minting cost and are not suitable to be used as investment. HOWEVER, buying pure gold from the after market, even if it is the form of jewellery might be profiting as the minting fee would probably have been deducted.
**Manufacturers' reputation**
![images (2).jpeg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/626384392b1f87ad2d5bfac8f49baa8f28972e8e9ca69740837b6d60ccca1c9e.jpg)
*Image6: an example of a gold bar with a LBMA logo*
With increasing number of fake gold in the market, people tend to trust gold item made by reputable manufacturers. Reputation status differs between countries, but generally, gold item made by companies with the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) logo tend to have the highest demand. That is not to say that there are no counterfeit LBMA bars in the market either. At the end of the day, physical testing of a gold item either using a spectrometer, acid test or fire test is the only definite way to confirm that an item truly contain gold or not.
**Bullion status**
![download (8).jpeg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/1d139c8f60636d967d149a2bf7440a3e4aa35d61c77ccfa43e2a97d26fce12a3.jpg)
*Image7: Kijang Emas is a bullion by Bank Negara Malaysia*
Bullion refer to a gold item which is produced officially by a nations' central banks. An example of a gold bullion is the Kijang Emas by Bank Negara Malaysia. A bullion has an additional value as a currency, although the face value will tremendeously below the actual metal value. A bullion usually is highly regarded and in many countries, bullion may be imported tax-free.
Rounds and replica are not to be confused with a bullion. Although they contain pure gold, they are not a credentialed bullion. They are imitates of any popular bullion and are commonly made by private entities.
**Gold value**
There are generally three type of gold value.
![IMG-20230822-WA0024.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/365c24e1fb877d3cb28e7ce2107f807c7edeaa866606c4049315af578db75900.jpg)
*Image8: Spot gold price shown on Kitco website*
Spot value refers to the actual metal value of a traded gold. A common site used to refer to spot price is [Kitco](https://www.kitco.com/charts/livegold.html). Price are displayed with substantial spread between the buy price and sell price. The price shown here refers to gold with a 999 purity. A gold of other purity are priced at a relative value to that. for example, a spot value of a 916 gold item is 91.6% to the spot price shown at Kitco.
Retail value refers to the final price of a physical gold item sold to end user. the price are substantially higher than a spot price and tend to be fixed by a certain associations. In Malaysia, retail price is influenced by the [FGJAM](https://www.fgjam.org.my/) association.
A buy back value refers to the gold price accepted by pawn shops and gold shops. Depending on geographical region, the price may be even lower than the spot price. If a gold item has additional impurities such as silver lining or diamond, the price may be dropped further.

Happy Sunday #Nostr!
We're very excited to announce that we are partnering with
nostr:npub1r3fwhjpx2njy87f9qxmapjn9neutwh7aeww95e03drkfg45cey4qgl7ex2 to bring you the #NostrTechWeekly newsletter here at the nostr:npub19mduaf5569jx9xz555jcx3v06mvktvtpu0zgk47n4lcpjsz43zzqhj6vzk . A little about him: he’s been on Nostr since January, and he’s a developer that’s been working on Nostr-related projects related to relays.
Our goal here is a weekly newsletter on the more technical happenings in the nostr-verse. Follow the hashtag #NostrTechWeekly to ensure you’re getting the newsletter ASAP!
Lots of activity improving the Nostr protocol this week! Let’s dive in.
## Recent Upgrades to Nostr (NIPs)
#### 1) [Nostr Marketplaces add Shipping Cost](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/711/files?short_path=e389bd4#diff-e389bd48ddd03fc0132da6d38bb30259b84f5a056c25bd6f32c341c991be1af7) 📦
This is a relatively small update to NIP 15 (marketplaces on Nostr); it adds explicit support for shipping cost as part of purchasing items on a marketplace implemented on top of this pattern.
Author: nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6
#### 2) [Consolidate core capabilities into NIP 1](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/703/files?short_path=39307f1#diff-39307f1617417657ee9874be314f13aabdc74401b124d0afe8217f2919c9c7d8) ⬇️
NIP 1 is dead simple which is why Nostr was so easy to start developing on. As more folks started developing on Nostr, some functionality was added to the Nostr protocol and codified as subsequent NIPs.
Now they’re all so core to the protocol that nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6 has advocated and merged an update that places all the core NIPs as part of NIP 1 since the philosophy is that you can theoretically enjoy decent Nostr experience if your client and relay only implement NIP 1. Now that’s true again!
Author: nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6
#### 3) [Mailing Lists](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/691) (Proposed) 💌
NIP 101 is a proposal to formalize a way for Nostr users to subscribe to mailing lists via the Nostr protocol.
Users can publish a specific kind of Nostr event with their email address and the list they want to subscribe to. The email address is encrypted, which means the manager of the mailing list and the subscriber are the only ones with access to the email address. This cuts out third parties used by the author of the newsletter (mailchimp, convertkit, etc).
Could be a neat foundation for a more private, secure, and decentralized newsletter tool to outcompete the existing players.
Author: [KaffinPX](https://github.com/KaffinPX)
#### 4) [NIPs over Nostr](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/704) (Proposed) ♻️
NIP 17 is a proposal to allow people to publish NIPs via Nostr itself. It allows versioning the NIP, being explicit about dependencies, and many other structured details that are missing from the existing repo (which is “just” a collection of Markdown).
Where this goes right is that the Nostr community can adopt NIPs without the blessing of the existing big players that currently manage the NIP repo (which is currently where “approved” NIPs) live.
Where this goes wrong is the difficulty of consensus on something this disorganized. NIPs would no longer be able to take advantage of 1) the tools like Github that help facilitate conversation as well as 2) the shepherding of the early Nostr community by the visionaries that started the movement through some measure of benevolent control of what gets merged into the NIP repo.
Authors: nostr:npub12262qa4uhw7u8gdwlgmntqtv7aye8vdcmvszkqwgs0zchel6mz7s6cgrkj
#### 5) [Gift wrapping events for secrecy](https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/716/files?short_path=790acba#diff-790acba7232977ed9ce7b8ea10d6e5b6d01f9f490571b53837fe21f74fddd962) (Proposed) 🎁
One of the big critiques of standard Nostr DMs is that the message is encrypted but the metadata (from, to, etc) is not. The proposed NIP 59 would allow Nostr users to almost entirely encrypt Nostr events including metadata.
The most obvious use case (and the motivating force) was to create more private and secure DMs. But anywhere where privacy matters on Nostr, gift wrapping Nostr events could help.

## Notable projects
#### [Amethyst private DMs](nostr:note1z578d4xg2mpevddtrvzp54h0ee7ldvg4fh65ygczfjvxuxq3dvesgzfgwg)
Amethyst (the client) has taken steps to implement their own version of DMs that are more private that standard Nostr DMs are at the moment. They’re using their own proposed “gift wrapping” NIP 59 (discussed above).
I think this will be a “proof is in the pudding” moment where we’ll see the code in action even before the NIP is adopted. If it works well, it’s hard to imagine NIP 59 won’t be approved.
#### [Favvy (Link in bio)](nostr:note1z27rw86ph8cmx9zvzzp3cn7kd0utuyw68y09lm6dxcdy4djuplgqp3c7yl)
A Nostr-based LinkTree competitor. Favvy allows Nostr users to configure their “link in the bio” page that links out to all the various places that can’t all fit in a profile bio.
It’s Nostr-based so if you control the private key for a Nostr account then you can update that accounts Favvy. Feels elegant.

#### [Nostr is the non-dystopian Super](https://tinyurl.com/superappnostr)
WeChat is a [super-app](https://hbr.org/2023/04/are-super-apps-coming-to-the-u-s-market) which can consolidate an entire ecosystem of functionality within a single mobile app. It’s attractive for mobile-first users and authoritarians who see it as an easier way to control users. This phenomenon has been mostly limited to Asian markets but X (formerly Twitter) is working towards the same goal. They claim to want it to be less dystopian, but we aren’t a very trusting community 🙂
Is there a way to build something that has all the advantages of the super app without the dystopian effects of centralization of such critical digital infrastructure?
Enter Nostr. This post by nostr:npub1l2vyh47mk2p0qlsku7hg0vn29faehy9hy34ygaclpn66ukqp3afqutajft (builder of highlighter.com) paints a picture of how Nostr currently has all the basics needed to achieve that dream already.
The Nostr protocol already seems to be evolving into a kind of decentralized, consent-based app store where developers are recreating much of the existing products internet users love, but with a bent towards self-sovereignty, privacy, security, and cutting out middlemen.
It’s a compelling vision. There would be much work to do, and many challenges to solve to keep the spirit of Nostr alive through mass adoption.

**Introduction**
Decentralized Naming System is an identity service which runs on a particular blockchain.
![download (1).png](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/23e12b760f3c91b7488b7374996a6bfaef9bc963b39dcb20ef443be10e5a6371.jpg)
*Image1: ICANN*
It is intend to complement or replace the current name service which is managed by ICANN (your.com, .org and all the other Domain Name Service [DNS]) as they can be censored or removed. Under the hood, a decentralized naming are just tokens, particular erc-721 token if on the Ethereum blockchain which is recorded on a register. This register may or may not be running within a Blockchain.
![download (2).png](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/f9832abced2b11055cbd4d66e054bc4c5e2e3efbdff6bb0e6a87ee876844ff12.jpg)
*Image2: Ethereum Name Service*
The most popular decentralized naming service is Ethereum Name Service (ENS) which uses .eth, followed by Unstoppable Domain (which owns .nft among others), DID (.bnb) and DAS (.bit). This article will highlight why current decentralized naming solutions fail to meet its objective and what alternatives are in place.
**A website domain**
The world wide web works in such a way that every device has an ip address. logging to websites using ip address is complicated for end users, so friendly names are used (like nostr.com).
![ICAN-Infographic---DNS-Query_Large.gif](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/605ea650d4f502b6449f7c4aa93a78a6533ae7bb2cb1ccb5499c55ec9291e5d2.png)
*Image3: DNS lookup*
When we click on the website name, under the hood, our browser does a DNS query of the name and find its way to the website IP address. If a decentralized naming service is used, such mechanism does not exist because our browser does not understand the address.
![Screenshot_20230820-085812.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/80aac9b316e09f6966425ad599ba9d62506edf6ec01ff761661094d0162b3953.jpg)
*Image4: .eth.limo is a .eth address with a DNS lookup support*
Try vitalik.eth for example. a regular chrome or safari browser cannot get to it. instead, you need to either :
1) use a specific browser such as brave browser, hence limiting accessibility.
or![68747470733a2f2f692e696d6775722e636f6d2f444956357138712e706e67.png](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/76216771754767410e7b6f2651eb411bbc4ad8d42604c9c22703c89dd707f030.jpg)
2) use a DNS adjunct, such as .eth.limo (eg. https://vitalik.eth.limo) which is a fallback to DNS service and can be censored all over again.
**A website**
Most DNS provider provides have an easy to use method to point your website to a DNS name service. It can be a single click wordpress installer (if you buy a hosting bundle) , a redirect or CNAME records.
The same, however cannot be said for decentralized naming service as intermediate Ethereum related knowledge are needed to connect the host to the domain name. one may argue that IPFS are the more common way of hosting decentralized name service website but even that is not an easy process.
![cLnvBJmn5XWQNHTiJlDgAQPlAFTT57fmTE5sD2iuLvc.png](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/a1c1c680df669736bb2e664e139ab1cc7f51d4c7382089042ff39a85a4206bce.jpg)
*Image5: gas fees at peak hours*
The worse can be said about subdomains. Not only the process is lengthy, the gas fee can be absurd at peak time as well. while it is possible to just host a DNS addres on ENS and create subdomains using offchain register (just like how cb.id did), the initial cost is high as well and is not decentralized anyway.
**Wallet compatibility and interoperability**
![Screenshot_20230820-114704.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/ac5496974e37171c5388694a8cf958d661b3c7efd04bd2baa284d8920c630d8f.jpg)
*Image7: Binance does not support ENS*
One of the role of decentralized name service is to replace lengthy long addresses with easier to read names. The question is, how many exchanges actually supports them? Very minimal frankly speaking.
![Screenshot_20230820-115409.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/1483996bf54e349307b3fe1282632864074fcc00454ba2db61c1792e3654740c.jpg)
*Image8: Poor support for L2 on Trustwallet*
While wallet compatibility for ENS are generally okay, it is limited to Ethereum. Support for other non-ENS name service is scarce with only a handful of wallet supporting them. Compatibility for other Ethereum layer 2 is limited and even worse for non-evm blockchain, even when ENS supports their registry.
**Reverse name lookup**
![1_hZ_xYZWU0C3g7QQEIknUng.png](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/5ae3ec26e268f942022844c709083b58a243ca86ef173c5b409759dcfaf0a74e.jpg)
*Image9: Resolved name lookup on Uniswap*
Reverse name lookup is the finding of a decentralized name service from a blockchain address. it provides aesthetic benefits when connecting to dapp. Ironically, not all dApp supports it. Even when there is a support, it is not reliable especisally when RPC are congested.
**lnaddress and nip-05, the better decentralized naming service**
![68747470733a2f2f692e696d6775722e636f6d2f444956357138712e706e67.png](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/148e6533112f3e9080f4d8ea5464c0e1772bf6c3d85068ef39bd1980981126ce.jpg)
*Image10: lnaddress structure*
lnaddress (lud16) are naming service on the ligthning network. It is not a service or a governance like the ENS. Rather it is an open protocol that can be adopted by anyone.
![IMG-20230820-WA0006.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/1c8af6f28384a6a7dfdf52d6d45c0547f6411ae45d8fdb858af22463ddb93d8c.jpg)
*Image11: Setting a Nip-05 on getalby.cok*
Nip-05 is similar in structure to lnaddress, but it is used to map nostr npub addresses instead.
Lud16 and nip05 work in such a way that is set onto a DNS name that you own or by someone who provides such service. While it still rely on a DNS, the owner has full control of the name, unlike ENS governance who can still control and revoke your domain name from the registrar due to expiry or governance vote.
![IMG-20230820-WA0007.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/091be23939485cdf707ffee8949cedaf43badc6b3f801fa2ecfda3f0e750ddea.jpg)
*Image12: Breez wallet supporting Lud16*
Due to its open protocol nature, wallet support is almost seamless, with both custodial and self-custodial wallets like Breez supporting them.
![Screenshot_20230820-134432.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/44ec830bc2c5cfd3d9d04f7b7e48715e72983606abc70a6808b626b82ea33cd7.jpg)
*Image13: Lud16 is easily intergrated into Nostr*
Lud16 are also easily intergrated into Nostr social media, thus, making it super easy for payment process (called zapping) and future potential for severless blockchainless smart contract like functionality.
![Screenshot_20230820-134411.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/4b74031440b89cbb7a538bb57a0aa1e1d08130451cc044e34fb0bbd6122325e0.jpg)
*Image14 : Reverse lookup function*
Reverse lookup also works seamlessly with Nostr or any lightning lapp which supports Nip-07 extension. The connectivity is way more stable than a web3 connection on EVM based blockchain.
Because no single entity controls the lud16 or nip05 implementation, it is very much immutable. Anyone or any group of people can set it, can set as much as they like and can even provide mirror lud16 (a lud16 which mirror another lud16 address). future development possibility is endless for these two implementations.

**Introduction**
Bitcoin is a blockchain technology which has been running since 2009. Ever since Satoshi Nakamoto has left the project, the Bitcoin blockchain has been running stable without a single episode of failure. However, changes are needed for various reasons; to reduce transaction costs or to add functionality to the blockchain. These changes, nevertheless should not compromise users who prefer to use the original blockchain. As a win-win solution, soft-forks are implemented. soft-forks are bitcoin improvement that is activated as an opt-in; should the user or client choose to accept it, it will bring extra functionality to them. here we will explore how these soft-forks impacted the address design of your Bitcoin wallet.
**1. Legacy address**
Legacy address are the original Bitcoin address. the address starts with "1" as shown below:
1JQe8QcouwvqBD3KBfXsGXeUHV1Aw9ddp8
these address has no added functionality and transaction using this address cost the most transaction fee.
**2. Pay to script hash (P2SH) address**
These kind of address has scripts that specify certain transactional condition, which could include a segwit functionality. it starts with a "3" such as:
34BYTiqoTunKEjNoPLjMYCk6WPNvUy4khV
transaction on this address is 26% cheaper than legacy address.
**3. Segwit address**
segwit is a block rearrangement mechanism whereby the signature is collected and combined outside of the blockchain. This not only obsfucate the transaction, it also make the transaction more compact, reducing transactional cost altogether
![bitpanda-academy-intermediate-16-segwit-infographic.jpeg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/aac76467cdf504829384e0c4fe5ea767d450b6809fb6af2f247391e62d470721.jpg)
*Image1: Segwit moves the signature to one end, improving transaction size*
a segwit address starts with a "bc1q" such as :
bc1qav04kv6k2dq8whxw9zyf5zw3c8ecyhrk6rf2yw
a transaction using segwit addresses are 38% cheaper than a legacy address transaction.
**4. Taproot address**
Taproot is a technology that allows batching of multiple signatures and transactions together, making it easier and faster to verify transactions on Bitcoin's network. Not only transaction will be cheaper, it also allow the attachment of additional data. such innovation has allowed the birth of several innovations, such as the ordinals. A taproot address starts with a "bc1p" such as :
bc1pmzfrwwndsqmk5yh69yjr5lfgfg4ev8c0tsc06e
their transaction fee cost is similar to segwit, though their functionality differs. however, the support for taproot addresses are currently still limited.

I would like to share an alternative management for constipation other than lactulose. Just a quick recap, lactulose is a type of laxative that works by increasing the osmolality of the Gastro intestinal tract, inducing water absorption into the feces. While it is a common medication for constipation, it has one particular side effect which is dependency.
Actually, the best way to alleviate constipation is by increasing fiber intake, although this process is relatively slow. However, there is one type of fiber that is quite effective, which is psyllium husk.
![GettyImages-1203579336_header-1024x575 (1).jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/0f1c1ac66efcaaa5ed08cd4fd11a1fb55af2efe92922b5ad4ab9cdecaeaa70af.jpg)
Psyllium comes from the plant genus Plantago whose seeds are used as a traditional preparation to treat constipation and mild diarrhea. Its mechanism of action is as a bulk-forming laxative. It has a lower dependency effect compare to lactulose. Additionally, it also has other co-beneficial effects such as being a normoglycemic (reduce blood sugar) agent and a hypocholestremic (reduce cholesterol level) agent.
However, it is not without side effects. Being of plant origin, some people may develop allergy towards it. Additionally, it may worsen constipation or even cause choking if taken without adequate water. It is to be noted that it can be taken in pregnancy , though with caution.
![does_psyllium_husk_dissolve_in_water.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/539a3be64ec19ee642b3fefa3e8f6c94623f1bf177a24ab03abe1f9e54cb3c31.jpg)
The recommended dosage to consume psyllium husk is one tablespoon dissolve in 1 cup of water once daily and can be taken up to twice daily.

"Power of a study represents the probability of finding a difference that exists in a population".
simply put, it tells how strong is the validity of the finding of your sudy. Power depends on 3 main factor:
significance level, effect size and sample size.
![183McHugh_slika1.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/2908aa4d6f7ec211b6958d10b8055578e137de726d7f49c3b7114133e3ea603e.jpg)
significance level is pretty straightforward. We decide it anyway. Thus, it is a no brainer why clinical trials tend to use very low p-levels.
You cant really control effect size. It is an after effect that you only gain after data collection.
But sample size, this is one curious bit. Probability sampling, as its name implies, is a process of taking a sample at random to represent the said population. Once, I heard that at times, probability samplings are better than universal sampling. I wonder, how can a sample of "somethihg" is better than the actual thing? The answer lies in missingness. Missingness is a situation where a data or part of a data is not available. Think of a study about relationship between lifestyle and heart disease. Body Mass Index is important and if it is missing, it will be a problem. when many data is lost from a universal sampling, it reduces the universality of the study, decreasing its power. If the missingness is significant, e.g. more than 30%, it might be better to put them as an exclusion criteria and choose random sampling instead. sure, it will stiffen study generalizability later, but it improves the power.

![Screenshot_20230816-121627.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/3c1f11c7a61c3da59fee67d45017ae5d318f3acfb1a298f1c7dac5b3f76e910b.jpg)

![IMG_20230816_123258_226.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/4b71cf3175d36daae00f906835a32d83437821af5fb22eebfc8063f7bc0a43cf.jpg)
*Imej4: Perbezaan ketara harga BTC dan BCH*
**Sifat BCH**
BCH mempunyai caj transaksi yang sangat rendah. Ini bermakna BCH tidak perlu bergantung kepada Layer 2 seperti BTC untuk transaksi mikro.
![IMG-20230816-WA0012.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/deee407a795578446b0f00338757d1a0f322ca699fec988bbccaa607b258884f.jpg)
![IMG-20230816-WA0013.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/59fffd43f8211527497f7a7b9bd745441f40b410ddd4bd1400d55a16bc9f0cbe.jpg)

**Wallet Bitcoin Cash**
![IMG-20230816-WA0016.jpg](https://cdn.nostr.build/i/428c92fb4360229c99d6a4a1fe96240ba45685c6b43cea90c063de01be34183d.jpg)
*Imej10: Wallet ini menyokong BCH, BTC dan ETH*
**Potensi BCH**
Komuniti BCH lazimnya bersifat inovatif.

# Intro
This short tutorial will help you set up your own Nostr Wallet Connect (NWC) on your own LND Node that is not using Umbrel. If you are a user of Umbrel, you should use their version of NWC.
## Requirements
You need to have a working installation of LND with established channels and connectivity to the internet. NWC in itself is fairly light and will not consume a lot of resources. You will also want to ensure that you have a working installation of Docker, since we will use a docker image to run NWC.
- Working installation of LND (and all of its required components)
- Docker (with Docker compose)
## Installation
For the purpose of this tutorial, we will assume that you have your lnd/bitcoind running under user bitcoin with home directory /home/bitcoin. We will also assume that you already have a running installation of Docker (or [docker.io](http://docker.io)).
### Prepare and verify
**git version** - we will need git to get the latest version of NWC. **docker version** - should execute successfully and show the currently installed version of Docker. **docker compose version** - same as before, but the version will be different. **ss -tupln | grep 10009**- should produce the following output: **tcp LISTEN 0 4096 0.0.0.0:10009 0.0.0.0:*** **tcp LISTEN 0 4096 [::]:10009 [::]:***
For things to work correctly, your Docker should be version 20.10.0 or later. If you have an older version, consider installing a new one using instructions here: **__<https://docs.docker.com/engine/install/>__**
### Create folders & download NWC
In the home directory of your LND/bitcoind user, create a new folder, e.g., "nwc" **mkdir /home/bitcoin/nwc**. Change to that directory **cd /home/bitcoin/nwc** and clone the NWC repository: **git clone https://github.com/getAlby/nostr-wallet-connect.git**
### Creating the Docker image
In this step, we will create a Docker image that you will use to run NWC.
* Change directory to `nostr-wallet-connect`: `cd nostr-wallet-connect`
* Run command to build Docker image: `docker build -t nwc:$(date +'%Y%m%d%H%M') -t nwc:latest .` (there is a dot at the end)
* The last line of the output (after a few minutes) should look like ` => => naming to docker.io/library/nwc:latest`
* `nwc:latest` is the name of the Docker image with a tag which you should note for use later.
### Creating docker-compose.yml and necessary data directories
* Let's create a directory that will hold your non-volatile data (DB): `mkdir data`
* In`docker-compose.yml`file, there are fields that you want to replace (<> comments) and port “4321” that you want to make sure is open (check with `ss -tupln | grep 4321`which should return nothing).
* Create `docker-compose.yml`file with the following content, and make sure to update fields that have <> comment:
```
version: "3.8"
services:
nwc:
image: nwc:latest
volumes:
- ./data:/data
- ~/.lnd:/lnd:ro
ports:
- "4321:8080"
extra_hosts:
- "localhost:host-gateway"
environment:
NOSTR_PRIVKEY: <use "openssl rand -hex 32" to generate a fresh key and place it inside "">
LN_BACKEND_TYPE: "LND"
LND_ADDRESS: localhost:10009
LND_CERT_FILE: "/lnd/tls.cert"
LND_MACAROON_FILE: "/lnd/data/chain/bitcoin/mainnet/admin.macaroon"
DATABASE_URI: "/data/nostr-wallet-connect.db"
COOKIE_SECRET: <use "openssl rand -hex 32" to generate fresh secret and place it inside "">
PORT: 8080
restart: always
stop_grace_period: 1m
```
### Starting and testing
Now that you have everything ready, it is time to start the container and test.
* While you are in the `nwc`directory (important), execute the following command and check the log output, `docker compose up`
* You should see container logs while it is starting, and it should not exit if everything went well.
* At this point, you should be able to go to `http://<ip of the host where nwc is running>:4321` and get to the interface of NWC
* To stop the test run of NWC, simply press `Ctrl-C` , and it will shut the container down.
* To start NWC permanently, you should execute `docker compose up -d` , “-d” tells Docker to detach from the session.
* To check currently running NWC logs, execute `docker compose logs` to run it in tail mode add `-f` to the end.
* To stop the container, execute `docker compose down`
That's all, just follow the instructions in the web interface to get started.
### Updating
As with any software, you should expect fixes and updates that you would need to perform periodically. You could automate this, but it falls outside of the scope of this tutorial. Since we already have all of the necessary configuration in place, the update execution is fairly simple.
* Change directory to the clone of the git repository, `cd /home/bitcoin/nwc/nostr-wallet-connect`
* Run command to build Docker image: `docker build -t nwc:$(date +'%Y%m%d%H%M') -t nwc:latest .` (there is a dot at the end)
* Change directory back one level `cd ..`
* Restart (stop and start) the docker compose config `docker compose down && docker compose up -d`
* Done! Optionally you may want to check the logs: `docker compose logs`

We’ve watched them come and go: social networking attempts like Mastodon (Activity Pub), Blue Sky, and recently, Threads. They’ve begun to follow what feels very much like a pattern. First basic functionality is built out, then there’s a crisis of some sort on mainstream social media, then there’s a population explosion on the new social network, people quickly become disillusioned, then a population collapse.
It can be very tempting, while watching these networks explode their user bases into the millions overnight, to wish for that for ourselves on Nostr. I do not. In fact, I believe this sudden explosive growth is partially responsible for the inevitable decline and collapse of these attempted “replacements” for any of the big corporately owned networks. Social networks don’t fail due to technology issues - they fail because of social issues.
## Culture Matters
When people exodus a media platform *en masse*, they bring their culture with them. Their expectations of the types of content they want to interact with, the ways they intend to behave, and the ways they engage with others. These patterns are influenced by two factors in mainstream social: moderation, and tradition.
- Moderation forms the culture in a top-down way, by establishing the limits of what kind of content will be acceptable on the platform. Platforms with relatively loose moderation policies will tend to attract people that diverge from established norms of behavior, more than those who typically conform.
- Tradition also informs culture in unique ways for each platform - the things that are easiest to find, provoke an emotional response, and are easy to share tend to dominate.
- Functionality also plays a role, albeit a lesser one, but one that tends to form the unique humor of a platform. Reddit is a fine example of this with its long threads of puns, each one building on the previous post. Hell threads on other platforms are another example.
The problem arises because new platforms rarely meet the expectations of another culture formed on another platform. Functionality will be different in subtle but important ways, and the early adopters of the new platform will be interested in different topics. This is very true on Nostr, where posts are rewarded specifically for quality - a metric that is very difficult to quantify, but any long-time user can identify - and an overabundant quantity of posts is more likely to get you muted than followed.
## Assimilation Matters
When users slowly trickle their way into a new platform, they are more inclined to ask questions, and attempt to understand the existing culture. They are the “new kid on the block” and will be more apt to seek feedback if they truly desire to achieve any sort of success. They then add the unique qualities of their personality to this information, and contribute something new to the culture, while still being a part of it.
When a large group of users joins all at once, they bring their own connections with them. When the group joining dwarfs the existing user base, they have less motivation to seek advice on how to best utilize the platform to its fullest potential, expecting that they will be able to continue connecting and communicating with their existing contacts in the same way they always have. This will inevitably lead to frustration when the new platform does not provide them with the same success that they had on the former platform - leading to the inevitable conclusion that the “new Twitter (or Facebook, Instagram, et al.)” is not as good as the old one.
And so we watch the tides of users go in and out, leaving old platforms in frustration for new ones, only to become equally frustrated with their inability to communicate and reach an audience as effectively as they used to, and returning to the old platform, or seeking yet greener pastures.
## Stability Matters
Sudden growth causes sudden problems. Both Mastodon and Blue Sky encountered major issues that they were not prepared to handle, and handled badly. Mastodon operators found themselves facing enormous hosting bills, and Blue Sky faces serious obstacles in keeping their promises to provide a “safe” environment with the influx of new users.
A slow, steady growth model allows the operators of services to face problems in a more measured way, and to build out both infrastructure and content tools to allow users to have a pleasant experience. It is less likely to take an otherwise major contributor to a project, and make them “tap out” due to rising costs, frustrated users, and a constant crisis mindset.
Nostr is a distributed network, and has amazing potential for horizontal scaling. Even if one in ten-thousand users who onboards onto Nostr decides to run a relay, the network will be in good shape. Content distribution can be handled in a large number of ways - it isn’t tied fundamentally to the protocol itself - which allows many different providers to be used, and new ways of handling content to be built.
But creating those relay operators and content hosts out of newbies takes time. A truly educated relay admin capable of handling the job of maintaining a secure and reliable relay takes weeks or days at best, assuming they are already familiar with similar tasks. Adding 10 million users overnight - the way Threads did - is likely to swamp existing providers before new providers have time to step in a fill the gap. Which would also have the effect of chilling user experience.
There is a lot of new terminology and capability to take in when joining Nostr. For the mainstream person, they are going to have to learn about: cryptographic keys, Nostr Addresses (NIP-05), Lightning Wallets, Zaps and by proxy Bitcoin, and eventually Lists, Relay Management, Paid Relays, how to find content, moderate their own feed, and more. Right now, Nostr is doing an excellent job of answering those questions and educating users on the new terminology and techniques *because the flow is small and steady* with a few bursts.
## The Tortoise and The Hare
I truly believe that the success of Nostr will be in no small part because it is growing steadily instead of all at once. Every user onboarded correctly adds to the army of people ready to help welcome the next little wave of people who learn about the decentralized and censorship resistant qualities of Nostr. These individuals are also given the time to become part of a kinder social group than is typically found on social media, and learn to truly become productive and successful as true Nostriches rather than just transplants from another place.
And that is truly the magic isn’t it? People don’t just move to Nostr, they become Nostriches. They become part of a real community, and they belong with us. We take refugees from other social media sites, and don’t leave them refugees. I think that’s beautiful and worth slowing down to do.
I don’t look to the short term for Nostr - I’m bullish for Nostr in the long haul. We are building to still be here after the others have already burnt themselves away. It reminds me of my home country:
> “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Thanks to your valuable [feedback](https://help.blockstream.com/hc/en-us/articles/14884124911385), we are confident the latest [release](https://blockstream.com/green) of Green is the best version yet and are excited to share the newly redesigned wallet now available for mobile users (with a desktop version in development). The new UX gives users a more refined experience based on their particular self-custody need, along with a sleeker, more intuitive interface.
We recognize both the learning curve self-custody presents to the everyday Bitcoin HODLer and the need for advanced security solutions for more experienced users. With the new Blockstream Green mobile app, we addressed this challenge by providing a simple, safe user flow for beginners while educating them on the basics of self-custody, as well as an all-new flexible interface for advanced users who seek a higher degree of control and greater functionality, including singlesig, multisig with two-factor authentication (2FA), and hardware wallet integration, and soon with more options like payments on the Lightning Network and separate cold storage watch-only wallets.
## An All-In-One Hybrid
One of the many ways Bitcoin revolutionizes money is by removing counterparty risk by enabling individuals to take custody (ownership) of their funds with a wallet. Self-custody gives you, and only you, full control of your money.
Your self-custody setup should evolve and become more robust over time, especially as your bitcoin stack begins to grow. What is safe for 500,000 sats is not necessarily the same for 0.05 BTC or 5 BTC. Simplifying accessibility to different security models makes it easier for both new users and long-time Bitcoiners to find the solution appropriate for their situation.
Under the new Blockstream Green UX, a user's journey starts with the generation of a single recovery phrase via singlesig wallet setup. Users can then choose to increase the level of security by protecting their funds with a main key for quick on-chain spending or by adding an extra layer of protection through two-factor authentication (2FA). The six-digit 2FA code, delivered via an authenticator app, email, SMS, or call, is required for each new outgoing transaction. This ensures that even if the primary recovery phrase falls into the wrong hands, the funds can only be moved with the 2FA authorization.
For users who are particularly concerned about the security of their setup, there is an option to take the keys offline completely. This is especially useful for those who only need to spend their funds sparingly. By taking the signer offline, users can use a hardware device like the Blockstream Jade, Ledger, or Trezor as their primary key, adding an extra layer of security to their setup. Advanced users can also mix and match different security features to protect against a variety of threat models, [including BIP39 passphrases](https://help.blockstream.com/hc/en-us/articles/8712301763737-What-is-a-BIP39-passphrase-).
[▶️ Video: A quick guide to setting up Blockstream Jade with its dedicated companion app, Blockstream Green, to easily receive, store and send bitcoin.](https://youtu.be/7aacxnc6DHg)
## More on Green’s Design Philosophy
The Blockstream Green wallet is composed of several core services, the signer and the validator most importantly, which are fundamental in understanding self-custody and why Bitcoin is valuable as uncensorable money.
The signer is the beating heart of the wallet and is responsible for the secure management of funds. By default, the keys on the Green app are highly secure, with the PIN unlock feature working as a blind oracle. Furthermore, users can increase their security level by storing and operating their keys offline with a dedicated device such as the Blockstream Jade.
The validation service acts as the brain of the wallet, checking that transactions are genuine. The Bitcoin blockchain validation service, which can be linked with various node-in-a-box solutions like Umbrel and Raspiblitz, monitors the legitimacy of the funds received. If this service is operated on a private node, in parallel, or in addition to the default [block explorer](https://blockstream.info/) service, users are provided with a higher degree of assurance that the incoming transactions they see in their wallet respect Bitcoin’s protocol rules, and no middlemen are cheating them. Remember, don't trust, verify.
We also prioritize privacy by default in Green, with user metadata, such as transaction notes and wallet preferences, cross-synced across platforms (e.g., iOS, Android, desktop) by a blind, encrypted service and without any KYC requirements. For further privacy, Green’s 2FA option allows for [time-based-one-time-passwords (TOTP)](https://help.blockstream.com/hc/en-us/articles/900003167766-What-is-Blockstream-Green-s-timelock-feature-) with an authenticator app of your choice, thus maintaining the highest degree of privacy and 2FA security. Additionally, Green has a built-in Tor service, or users can alternately connect with a proxy (via VPN) when accessing the wallet.

## Other Features Coming Soon
The new wallet design is only the start of many more exciting updates and features coming soon to Blockstream Green. As hyperbitcoinization continues to intensify, Lightning is becoming the preferred option for fast, cheap bitcoin payments around the world. By integrating our on-demand node service, [Greenlight](https://blockstream.com/lightning/greenlight/), Blockstream Green will simplify the process of bringing Lightning functionality to its users while also allowing them to maintain self-custody of their funds. Once Greenlight is integrated, Blockstream Green will be the first wallet in the market to enable payments across the Bitcoin mainchain and its major layer-2 solutions, Liquid and Lightning.
We also plan to introduce watch-only wallets that can be paired with even more hardware devices (e.g., ColdCard, Bitbox, Seedsigner, and Passport) to help users better track daily spending habits with a greater degree of security.

If you think ordinals are some sort of justice that takes away control over Bitcoin from toxic maxis, you have entirely missed the point. And you might just have to go back to reading Satoshi’s White Paper one more time.
A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. Emphasis on CASH. Why am I so focused on that specific part? Well, because that's what Bitcoin is—money.
With all the exposure most bitcoiners have had to the positive effects of the Bitcoin law in El Salvador, you should understand its purpose by now. No?
We are far away from a hyperbitconized world. Still, with a little adoption worldwide, we can see how Bitcoin changes lives, gives opportunities, and brings economic justice with sovereignty.
Ordinal theory is just a way for privileged people to keep the fiat status quo alive at the expense of humanity's one pure opportunity for actual freedom. And if you don’t see it or understand, if you think there is one more application to Bitcoin, and this is all just fun and games, I invite you to come to Latin America.
Bitcoin is far too important for us to think that experimenting on layer-1 is just a part of progress.
Progress happens when you can keep your savings and use them as you see fit without being dictated by central bank policies. It's when you can provide for your family with your earnings from yesterday without worrying about greedy bankers printing more money and taking away from your ability to put food on the table today.
JPEGs are not progress. Being able to stay in your country and build a life is. And if you can’t understand that, maybe it is time for you to walk out of that mental cage and step into the real world.

I was sent a link to a Twitter Space last night where David Bailey, Bitcoin Magazine CEO, was on stage discussing their magazine cover ordinal/NFT auction. I tuned in for over an hour, hoping to get better insight into their decision; I left disappointed.
I am not disappointed in #Bitcoin, the permissionless network. No, I am grateful that bitcoin allows others to use it in ways I disagree with because it also affords me that same freedom. I am disappointed in the leadership of a large global brand that calls itself Bitcoin Magazine. More on that in a moment, but first, let me share a bird's eye view of how I feel about inscriptions.
Unless and until enough people are willing to change something in the rules of the bitcoin protocol (not something I’m advocating for/against here), then people will use the bitcoin blockchain in any way those rules allow.
Block space is block space in that regard — it holds data, and it is and should be neutral at the protocol layer as long as it doesn’t violate consensus rules. But block space doesn’t and never will exist neutrally at the social layer, and responsibility for what that data is and how it is used falls on whoever put it there or is using it. I appreciated one speaker making a similar point during the space. He used the extreme example of CP as data that “can” be stored on the blockchain but socially and morally should not be.
In the case of using inscriptions to make NFTs on the blockchain, people will do what they will do, and that’s where my disappointment arises with Bitcoin Magazine. Their leadership chose to engage in promoting the scam that digital copies of an image can be scarce. (If you disagree with me on that being a scam, then I am sorry for your ignorance. Kindly go pound sand.)
Bailey insisted that their auction was done in as fair and non-scammy a manner as they knew how, but the problem is that no matter how fair the process may be, when the thing being sold is itself a scam, a non-scarce valueless shitcoin, then the whole process becomes a scam. There is no moral way to scam someone.
For anyone curious, here is one of the “scarce” digital images Bitcoin Magazine auctioned off (https://ordinals.bitcoinmagazine.com/content/79311cc42ced5c20d6fae28c3f6e4022b1040e297ad4b1829f0690a499cb3306i0) claiming that the inscription identified here (https://ordinals.bitcoinmagazine.com/inscription/79311cc42ced5c20d6fae28c3f6e4022b1040e297ad4b1829f0690a499cb3306i0) proves ownership of it.
I believe that is the crux of the disagreement between Bitcoin Magazine and many bitcoiners. I don’t think Bailey fully understands the significance of those two different viewpoints. He clearly thinks these digital copies of a magazine cover have value, or at the very least, he lacks the courage to say otherwise because of his paycheck. Either way, this decision puts the full weight of Bitcoin Magazine’s global brand in support of scammy behavior.
What you “can” and “should” do are not always the same. Bitcoin Magazine should not be doing this, even though they can. But unfortunately, after listening to that Space last night, I’m fairly certain Bailey’s response would be, “fuck you, we’re doing it anyway, and nobody can stop us.” And he’s right; nobody can stop Bitcoin Magazine, or me, from using #Bitcoin however we choose. But I CAN choose whether I support Bitcoin Magazine with my time, attention, and money. I will not be supporting them with any of those resources of mine as long as they continue to support and engage in scammy behavior.

"Kill every buffalo you can! Every dead buffalo is an Indian gone."
Near the end of the 19th century, this was the stated goal of the US government. At the time large swaths of Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado were still controlled by the Comanche, the last great Indian nation of the American Plains. The Comanche were brutal in their methods of war, and had absorbed many of their enemies well before the Europeans arrived. They had been successful at beating back the Mexican and Spanish armies and were confident they could do it again.
They were decentralized. They could navigate their territory more effectively, and could survive longer in the inhospitable areas of the high plains. They knew where to find water and where to hide. The Comanche owned and controlled thousands of horses, which made them wealthy. They were better horsemen than their enemies and could hit a target from 50 yards while riding at full speed. They had ways of fighting and terrorizing the encroaching frontiersmen that instilled fear in their enemy. No other nation had been able to defeat them, but they failed to recognize their greatest weakness. Their dependence on the buffalo.
The buffalo's value among the Plains tribes, was priceless. Experts estimate that 60 million Buffalo freely grazed and cultivated the land. For centuries, they provided the people with everything from fly swatters to shelters. The native tribes followed the herds and only killed what they needed. Since the Buffalo were life-givers, the people carefully maintained a balance, never overkilling for sport, and only hunted for sustenance.
Generals William T. Sherman and Philip Sheridan believed that if the government could eradicate the Buffalo, the Indians would have no choice but to give up. He was quoted as saying, "Take away anything essential for the survival of a people, and they will surrender. As long as the Buffalo roamed the Plains, so did the Indians." In a fifty-five-year period, from 1830-1885, soldiers, hunters, and settlers killed more than 40 million Buffalo.
The annihiliation of the buffalo led to the subjugation of the Comanche. They became wards and dependants of the state. They were moved onto reserves and their ways of living were not permitted. They were not allowed to hunt, and were forced to farm. They could not leave their reserve without permission, and were often provided with food that was not edible. The nations were broken and defeated, but this was still not enough. The government needed to destroy a generation. They needed to kill the Indian in every child.
"Kill the Indian in every child"
Residential schools were the means by which this task was undertaken. Children were taken from their homes and were taught that their beliefs were evil. That they were savages. They were meant to feel worthless, and were taught to hate who they once were. Through an instutional system of abuse and "re-education" the goal was to eradicate a culture of freedom, so that it could be replaced with one of servitude and obedience. The last of these schools in Canada was closed in 1996.
"Kill the liberty, control the man"
Like the first nations of the Great Plains, we are in a battle for the right to choose what kind of life we want to live. Our battle is not one that will be fought out in the open. We will not see the faces of our enemies. Today, our warriors are developers. Their horses are their hardware, their minds are their bows, and their code are their arrows. The protocols they build are the ancient paths that have always existed in the physical world. The paths that connect individuals, who freely transact in ideas and value, where their reputations are the most important currency. Reputations built upon their ideas, rather than their identities.
These paths are used to connect and protect our community. These paths guide us towards shelter, sustenance, and community. They enlighten, entertain, and enrich. Our communities are built on the values we share. Freedom, openness, critical thought, and the inherent right to challenge the ideas of others. It is our job as individuals to protect these paths, to promote these paths, and to welcome newcomers and refugees from the old system.
Like the Comanche, the protocols and networks we build have weaknesses. They have points of failure that can be exploited. We have dependencies, just as the Comanche were dependent on the buffalo. Those in power have been relentless in their attempts to starve us into submission. They have attacked our networks through policies related to energy, self custody, KYC, and privacy. Great technical minds and efforts have been devoted to protecting our "buffalo". Bitcoin has been tested many times and has proven itself to be resilient, but they will continue to poke and prod until they find our "buffalo".
Luckily, I don't believe our children will have to undergo the same overt physical and mental abuse of residential schools. However, we need to ask ourselves what values are being instilled in our children? Are they being taught to value privacy? Are they being taught to value freedom of expression, without fears of being canceled? Are they being taught how economies function, or the misery communism has caused throughout the world? Are they being taught to demand control over their data, to be free, and sovereign, or are they being indoctrinated into a state where they are passive participants in a system predicated on dependency? Are they being taught to put in the work to create and build things of value, or are they being taught to sell themselves in the most "clickable" way to garner attention and eyeballs. The more extreme and abhorrant the act, the more successful one can be.
If you want to know what the goals of those in power are, observe how they treat their children. Listen to what they are being taught. Dictators and the purveyors of tyranny know that if they want to control the future, they need to control the children. We are just begining to wake up to the fight for control over the values and beliefs that are taught to our children. The values and beliefs that will be fought over, well after we are dead.
We can not underestimate what those in power are prepared to do, and we can not ignore their ability to convince others to do the same. 60 million buffalo once roamed the great plains of North America, which were followed and hunted by a nation of warrios, who were resilient and self sufficient. They were sovereign, they land and weapons, but their enemies had bigger weapons.
Our warriors are stronger, our protocols are better, our communities are fortified by a system of truth, but we need to be ready for the battles that lay ahead. It is our stories, our ideas, and our ability to communicate that will win this war, because we are all on the reserve now.

There’s a lot of conversation around the #TwitterFiles. Here’s my take, and thoughts on how to fix the issues identified.
I’ll start with the principles I’ve come to believe…based on everything I’ve learned and experienced through my past actions as a Twitter co-founder and lead:
1. Social media must be resilient to corporate and government control.
2. Only the original author may remove content they produce.
3. Moderation is best implemented by algorithmic choice.
The Twitter when I led it and the Twitter of today do not meet any of these principles. This is my fault alone, as I completely gave up pushing for them when an activist entered our stock in 2020. I no longer had hope of achieving any of it as a public company with no defense mechanisms (lack of dual-class shares being a key one). I planned my exit at that moment knowing I was no longer right for the company.
The biggest mistake I made was continuing to invest in building tools for us to manage the public conversation, versus building tools for the people using Twitter to easily manage it for themselves. This burdened the company with too much power, and opened us to significant outside pressure (such as advertising budgets). I generally think companies have become far too powerful, and that became completely clear to me with our suspension of Trump’s account. As I’ve said before, we did the right thing for the public company business at the time, but the wrong thing for the internet and society. Much more about this here: https://twitter.com/jack/status/1349510769268850690
I continue to believe there was no ill intent or hidden agendas, and everyone acted according to the best information we had at the time. Of course mistakes were made. But if we had focused more on tools for the people using the service rather than tools for us, and moved much faster towards absolute transparency, we probably wouldn’t be in this situation of needing a fresh reset (which I am supportive of). Again, I own all of this and our actions, and all I can do is work to make it right.
Back to the principles. Of course governments want to shape and control the public conversation, and will use every method at their disposal to do so, including the media. And the power a corporation wields to do the same is only growing. It’s critical that the people have tools to resist this, and that those tools are ultimately owned by the people. Allowing a government or a few corporations to own the public conversation is a path towards centralized control.
I’m a strong believer that any content produced by someone for the internet should be permanent until the original author chooses to delete it. It should be always available and addressable. Content takedowns and suspensions should not be possible. Doing so complicates important context, learning, and enforcement of illegal activity. There are significant issues with this stance of course, but starting with this principle will allow for far better solutions than we have today. The internet is trending towards a world were storage is “free” and infinite, which places all the actual value on how to discover and see content.
Which brings me to the last principle: moderation. I don’t believe a centralized system can do content moderation globally. It can only be done through ranking and relevance algorithms, the more localized the better. But instead of a company or government building and controlling these solely, people should be able to build and choose from algorithms that best match their criteria, or not have to use any at all. A “follow” action should always deliver every bit of content from the corresponding account, and the algorithms should be able to comb through everything else through a relevance lens that an individual determines. There’s a default “G-rated” algorithm, and then there’s everything else one can imagine.
The only way I know of to truly live up to these 3 principles is a free and open protocol for social media, that is not owned by a single company or group of companies, and is resilient to corporate and government influence. The problem today is that we have companies who own both the protocol and discovery of content. Which ultimately puts one person in charge of what’s available and seen, or not. This is by definition a single point of failure, no matter how great the person, and over time will fracture the public conversation, and may lead to more control by governments and corporations around the world.
I believe many companies can build a phenomenal business off an open protocol. For proof, look at both the web and email. The biggest problem with these models however is that the discovery mechanisms are far too proprietary and fixed instead of open or extendable. Companies can build many profitable services that complement rather than lock down how we access this massive collection of conversation. There is no need to own or host it themselves.
Many of you won’t trust this solution just because it’s me stating it. I get it, but that’s exactly the point. Trusting any one individual with this comes with compromises, not to mention being way too heavy a burden for the individual. It has to be something akin to what bitcoin has shown to be possible. If you want proof of this, get out of the US and European bubble of the bitcoin price fluctuations and learn how real people are using it for censorship resistance in Africa and Central/South America.
I do still wish for Twitter, and every company, to become uncomfortably transparent in all their actions, and I wish I forced more of that years ago. I do believe absolute transparency builds trust. As for the files, I wish they were released Wikileaks-style, with many more eyes and interpretations to consider. And along with that, commitments of transparency for present and future actions. I’m hopeful all of this will happen. There’s nothing to hide…only a lot to learn from. The current attacks on my former colleagues could be dangerous and doesn’t solve anything. If you want to blame, direct it at me and my actions, or lack thereof.
As far as the free and open social media protocol goes, there are many competing projects: @bluesky is one with the AT Protocol, nostr another, Mastodon yet another, Matrix yet another…and there will be many more. One will have a chance at becoming a standard like HTTP or SMTP. This isn’t about a “decentralized Twitter.” This is a focused and urgent push for a foundational core technology standard to make social media a native part of the internet. I believe this is critical both to Twitter’s future, and the public conversation’s ability to truly serve the people, which helps hold governments and corporations accountable. And hopefully makes it all a lot more fun and informative again.
💸🛠️🌐
To accelerate open internet and protocol work, I’m going to open a new category of #startsmall grants: “open internet development.” It will start with a focus of giving cash and equity grants to engineering teams working on social media and private communication protocols, bitcoin, and a web-only mobile OS. I’ll make some grants next week, starting with $1mm/yr to Signal. Please let me know other great candidates for this money.

Hello Nostriches! Things have picked up here in #Nostrland. New accounts keep popping up, and after a "much wow" disappointment logo exchange on Bitcoin Twitter💩, many new #nostr keys were born.
It's starting to feel like pretty soon🤞 we will be able to ditch the blue bird that after a pump and dump, very shitcoinery move, decided to return.
Before I started writing for the NostReport, I would never visit my global feed. It felt lonely when I began scrolling it looking for news, trying to ensure I could keep up with nostr:npub1xy54p83r6wnpyhs52xjeztd7qyyeu9ghymz8v66yu8kt3jzx75rqhf3urc , nostr:npub1t2wy3j850q34zy6amzw9mzfsl66eedcx2tlaxlv3v7leytedzp5szs8c2u , nostr:npub1lrnvvs6z78s9yjqxxr38uyqkmn34lsaxznnqgd877j4z2qej3j5s09qnw5 , and nostr:npub1pvuugp6fyj6t6yeq9ajzv28p54w07sg6jpxvzuu5yc7qmu9edpkqm2d7a5 , and constantly I would fail. The feed was going radio silent after #Nostrica, the over-hype created during the unconference was fading, and I was starting to feel a little alone. 😥
However, things have been picking up, and I've found new and old voices sharing their thoughts.
How are these new voices finding this purple space with no algorithms, much more chill, no-fight vibes, and starting a community from the ground up again?🤙 Are they enjoying the V4V instant reward experience as we all are? These are all questions I had for them, and as the new excited reporter, I politely decided to slide into their DMs...😊
While I patiently waited for them to notice me, which is still taking longer than I would like😔 but no more than I expected it to, I went ahead and asked the people on my feed about it. 😬
They all had different specific reasons, but we were all moved towards Nostr for the same reason. The need for change. 💜
nostr:npub15q36t6zje2qttpwfyux8cd8fy3n9d3w365w49a8063wc8lefrywsrr64da told me he decided to join the purple side after learning about #bitcoin. His words said, "It's actually a second entry to bitcoin."
That seems logical since I was introduced to #nostr by bitcoiners that have taught me so much. However, I have been able to get no-coiners to become bitcoiners by learning about V4V. Just this week, I got my sweet best friend, nostr:npub1ua8ghugqgqx39rjfl3k8xc95m4ymrt04h3vqxpqg9gdh857r33xsh9nhyr ,🫶 to join us after I showed her what my zap⚡️
wallet looked like on a regular day. Believe I had talked to her about bitcoin before. It just had a different effect when seeing it work.
nostr:npub1fuxyj4mptp9zcr33n7g07922lm36zzh3wzzlwzawye8dthcqggyqvw63dh told me that he is still in the process of trying something new out. His exact words were: "I need to move into a community and move out of the current sick paradigm. Trying here first." Let's give him some zaps⚡️ to ensure he stays with us. He needs to see what a warm, welcoming community we are😇.
And nostr:npub1x0f73kwdhewsuky4rcr5rpl7t464zqf9m8etlp8ha97d7ejjuvxq54gztf and nostr:npub1muge3z8k53ts45nfhthsrn6qjzjw6qxfg704r9e8pxnmgwnvpzsq7yv3av told me something very similar. Hawk said: "A Decentralized social network full of chill people!? What more do you need?!" CTarian went in a little more philosophical but said the same: "I am tired of being monitored by every Tom Dick and Harry of the Deep State. Nostr feels like just picking up the phone in the old days, and knowing you're actually communicating with a real person. He even went ahead and called for devs to maybe come up with his utopian client: "Plus, for some reason, I keep thinking a Nostr person much smarter than me could develop a Client that can figure out an election system that could clean up the fraud."
All of these people come from different backgrounds and joined nostr for various reasons. You guys have heard me before. I feel safe sharing my thoughts around here. Some say this is an early adopter effect, and the more popular the protocol becomes, the more this effect can be lost.
And this does worry me😔. However, I am confident that we are all working towards the same goal, and I trust we will keep pushing toward the same mission.
There is so much "camino por recorrer" left 😁, and the unknowns are so many, that I want to know your thoughts on this. Is it possible to keep Nostr a safe, refreshing place? Will the clown world come and take over and make it serve its purpose? Or have we all had enough, and whoever comes here will join the same battle?
Please leave your ideas in the comment section. I would love to investigate how we can keep this a safe space. For now, I am saying goodbye.🤙
Ps: Before I got to publish this OpEd I got a DM from the one and only nostr:npub1gdu7w6l6w65qhrdeaf6eyywepwe7v7ezqtugsrxy7hl7ypjsvxksd76nak , which was super exciting and I am still in shock he took the time to read my message and answer it.
However, his very polite answer still told me that for now he is not diving into Nostr cause he is busy preparing his book. I understand Saifedean. I want you to finish that book soon so I can dive into it right away! You and nostr:npub19dg0l8fnsv0xjnjx28t54g6xvt40ly3mpk5hj7fgmaeds8fk3dfsk76yd2 have me patiently waiting on your next masterpieces!

*Proof of my excitement here ☝️ telling the nostr.report team that he had answered in my very excited highschool girl fashion!*
