The default is relay.nsec.app and it's connecting fine for me, so the relay isn't down.
That said, for any apps that let you "sign in with Amber" the relay is unnecessary. Those all use the Android signer spec defined in NIP-55 and it all happens locally on your device.
The relay is needed for using the "bunker" or remote signing spec defined in NIP-46. You can add a different default relay to use for this in your relay settings, if relay.nsec.app isn't working for you.
I recommend using Citrine as the relay for any apps you are logging into from the same device.

They were kernel btrfs processes that were busy. I also got dmesg errors that were basically timeouts. I spent a lot of time with the disks thinking they were failing, but no they weren't. Also the mounts were taking so long that systemd was giving up. But after some research I upgraded to btrfs space cache v2 and that problem went away. I also spent time defragmenting and balancing and reading as much as I could on how to speed up btrfs. But eventually I just moved to SSD where it didn't really matter.
I don't know if you ever tried ZFS but I used it a lot for about a decade and it never gave me any problems (except as I mention the kernel upgrades breaking it). And I love raidz which btrfs doesn't do.

It is only beneficial in a client that allows you to see that relay's feed separately. So Jumble or Coracle would be the main ones.
The benefit it provides is surfacing content you are likely to be interested in, based on how you have interacted with other npubs in the past, but maybe have missed due to it being buried too far down your chronological feed.
Now that you can change the weighting for the algorithm yourself, you get to decide the type of notes it will surface for you. In other words, now the algorithm works FOR YOU, not against you like centralized social media.
I can try my hand at writing a tutorial later this evening.
